Spielberg Finds Sophie for the ‘BFG’ Adaptation
Dreamworks has finally found their Sophie for their upcoming film adaptation of the children’s story book “BFG.” Read on for further details.
Child actor Ruby Barnhill is set to play the lead role in DreamWorks’ upcoming adaptation of the children’s story book, “BFG.” Barnhill, who’s fairly a new face in Hollywood, was cast to play Sophie, a young girl who befriends a Big Friendly Giant, hence the title.
“After a lengthy search, I feel Roald Dahl himself would have found Ruby every bit as marvelous as we do, we have discovered a wonderful Sophie in Ruby Barnhill,” Steven Spielberg said in an official statement.
"BFG" will be Barnhill’s first major film appearance. Barnhill also stars in the upcoming BBC children’s series, “Four O’Clock Club.”
“BFG” is based on a children’s book of the same name, written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake, first published in 1982. Set in the outskirts of London, “BFG” follows the adventures of Sophie and her unlikely friend, the BFG, a 24-foot-tall individual who has super-hearing abilities and immense speed.
"BFG" will be directed by Spielberg from a script by "ET" screenwriter Melissa Mathison. Three-time Tony Award-winning actor Mark Rylance was announced earlier to play the titular role.
"Mark Rylance is a transformational actor. I am excited and thrilled that Mark will be making this journey with us to Giant Country. Everything about his career so far is about making the courageous choice and I’m honoured he has chosen The BFG as his next big screen performance," Spielberg commented about Rylance.
“BFG” will be released on July 1, 2016, to be distributed worldwide by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures under its Touchstone Pictures banner, except for territories in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, where the film's distribution rights will be sold by Mister Smith Entertainment to independent distributors. DreamWorks' financial partner, Reliance Entertainment, will release the film in India. Entertainment One will release the film on July 22, 2016 in the UK.
