‘STAR WARS EPISODE VIII’: SIX THINGS THAT WE KNOW (SO FAR)
While the recent release of “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” may have sated fans’ and followers’ thirst for a fresh “Star Wars” film, it doesn’t mean that fans aren’t already impatiently waiting for “Star Wars Episode VIII”. So, what can we say about the next installment to one of the most successful franchises in movie history, actually? Here’s everything that we know so far:
1. It doesn’t have a title yet.
We have our own fair share of theories, but it looks like one of the things that are as of yet to be known is what Episode VIII is going to be actually called.
2. It won’t be written by J.J. Abrams.
E! Online reports that Abrams had passed on the writing and directing torch solely to Rian Johnson (who also helmed the sci-fi action film “Looper” that starred Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.), while Kathleen Kennedy (president of LucasFilm) will be handling the production side of things.
3. Han Solo’s Daughter Might Make an Appearance
Casting call for a “strong female character” perpetuated rumors that we might be seeing Han Solo’s daughter. Potential candidates for the role include Gina Rodriguez, Olivia Cooke, and Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany.
4. Filming for “Star Wars Episode VIII” has already begun
Movies Cheat Sheet adds that filming has already taken place in Ireland, since last September. The leading theory is that the exotic locale may provide the “feel” for Luke Skywalker’s faraway hideout.
5. The cast is growing bigger
…in the most basic sense of the word. Reports of Benicio Del Toro joining the roster of talented actors as a major villain were received, together with Oscar Isaac (to reprise his role as Dameron), and Daisy Ridley.
6. The script is complete, but rewrites aren’t exactly out of the picture
J.J. Abrams’ statements in a recent interview seem to suggest that they will be striving for as seamless a transition from Episode VII to Episode VIII as possible. In light of this, the final script may go through a process of numerous, if not almost endless, rewrites.
That may be everything we have but, of course, this is not the be-all-end-all of lists as more rumors and leaks may follow. Be sure to check Movie News Guide frequently to catch up on the latest updates regarding “Star Wars Episode VIII” and the rest of the “Star Wars” franchise!
