Star Wars Rebels Recap: The Siege of Lothal

Star Wars Rebels” Season 2 Episode 1 “The Siege of Lothal” aired on Saturday, June 20, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on Disney XD. In this episode, the titular rebels, who have since joined up with a fledgling Rebel Alliance, headed back to Lothal for a mission, only to discover that the Empire, thanks to Darth Vader (James Earl Jones), had tightened their fist on Lothal in order to capture the rebels. While there, Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) encounter Darth Vader for the first time; and an epic space battle between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance allowed both Darth Vader and Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) to come to a startling realization. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with a battle in space. It ws between the Ghost crew, backed up by the Phoenix Squadron of the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. It was while completing their mission of stealing some much needed cargo from the Empire.

Meanwhile, on Lothal, Minister Tua (Kath Soucie), the minister assigned to Lothal, was instructed by Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) to report to Grand Moff Tarkin’s ship in the morning in order to receive judgment for failing to capture the Jedi Kanan Jarrus’ (Freddie Prinze Jr.) rebel cell on Lothal. Afterwards, Darth Vader told Agent Kallus  Kallus (David Oyelowo) that they would force the people of Lothal to give the rebels up.

Fearing for her life, Minister Tua contacted Kanan’s group. He asked for help in exchange for the real reason why the Empire was so hard on Lothal and for a list of rebel sympathizers on other planets. The rebel leaders, Commander Sato (Keone Young) and the Jedi Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein), agreed to let them go, as Kanan, Ahsoka and Kanan’s padawan or apprentice, Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) sensed that Tua was telling the truth.

Before leaving on another shuttle that was piloted by Chopper, their droid, Kanan informed Hera Syndulla (Vanessa Marshall) that he wasn’t really keen on continuing on with the Rebel Alliance. He didn’t want to be part of anything that was military in nature.

On Lothal, Kanan dressed up as a stormtrooper, and the team engaged Agent Kallus and his storm troopers in a firefight. They then told Tua to run into the shuttled. It was blown up with her in it, as Darth Vader had set everything up so that everyone would think that Kanan’s group had killed her.

They then hid out inside Ezra’s parent’s place. After it got destroyed by stormtroopers, they decided to go to the one place that wouldn’t have a lot of storm troopers as they were all out looking for them-the Imperial Complex.

They managed to sneak in thanks to Kanan’s Jedi mind tricks. They then headed for the landing platform. They managed to get hold of a shuttle, and six military grade shield generators. However, storm troopers greeted them, and Darth Vader, whose presence Ezra and Kanan immediately felt, fought them both. They barely managed to escape Darth Vader, and Sabine got hit by several shots that he deflected back at her. Kanan then explained to Ezra that that person they fought was a Sith lord, the enemy of the Jedi.

As they would be detected if they left the planet’s orbit, they bartered with Lando Carlissian (Billy Dee Williams) for a shuttle to get out of the planet. Sabine managed to create several transponders that would send out the same signal as the ship to buy them enough time. While waiting, Ezra and Kanan discovered that the town that they helped before had been burned, and everyone in it had been taken prisoner.

After arriving at the Rebel Alliance command ship, Chopper told them that the Empire had placed a tracking device on them, which allowed Vader to follow them. Vader proved to be better than all their pilots and managed to hit the command ship. The Ghost, along with Ahsoka got his attention, and while Kanan and Ahsoka tried to determine who the Sith was, Ezra told them that it was the same Sith they encountered on Lothal. As Ahsoka recognized her old Jedi Master, Anakin Skywalker, Vader recognized his former padawan.

Imperial destroyers then came. They tried to trap the Ghost in their tractor beam but caught Vader instead. They managed to escape, and Commander Sato managed to escape in the escape pods.

Afterwards, Ahsoka told Kanan and Ezra that she didn’t know who the Sith lord was. Meanwhile, Vader reported the fact that Ahsoka was alive to Emperor Palpatine (Sam Witwer). He told him that she might be able to lead them to other surviving Jedi, such as Vader’s old Jedi Master, Obi Wan Kenobi.
