Cowabunga! The highly anticipated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film debuted last week, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it has exceeded expectations by earning $ 65 million domestically in its opening weekend, despite the fact that it is in competition with Marvel’s “Guardians of The Galaxy,” which was released last Aug. 1, 2014. The surprising performance of the opening weekend of the film paved the way for Paramount to announce that there will be a sequel to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” which will be released on June 3, 2016.
“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before,” said Adam Goodman, president of Paramount Picture’s Film Group, as published on The Hollywood Reporter.
According to Goodman, it would be easier now to continue the story of the Turtles, as the initial response to the reboot has exceeded their high expectations. There have been other live-action films done of the Turtles before, including a trilogy of live-action films in the 1990s and a live action film in 2007. The sequel already has some of the original members of the production team aboard. Michael Bay will be returning to produce the sequel, alongside Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, his partners in their production outfit, Platinum Dunes. Producers Scott Mednick and Galen Walker are also on board to produce the sequel, as well as the first film’s writers, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. However, it has not been confirmed whether director Jonathan Liebsmen will be on board to direct the sequel.
