The Affair Recap: Episode 6 [WATCH VIDEO]
“The Affair” Season 1 Episode 6 aired on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on Showtime. Noah learned something about Alison and the Lockharts, which should seal his decision about his affair with Alison. Find out the details in the recap below.
NOTE: As the series is told in two storylines, the recap will be divided into Noah’s Story and Alison’s Story.
Remember when Noah (Dominic West) told the investigator at the end of Episode 5 that he was not aware of the club called The End? In the latest episode, Noah was actually there, which meant that he lied to the police. He was at the club to meet with Max (Josh Stamberg), his best friend, who was visiting from the city. As he was such in a party mood, Max indulged in cocaine, hiding at the back of a cab, which disgusted Noah.
Anyway, the two were catching up back at the club. Max apparently just separated from his wife. Then Alison (Ruth Wilson) appeared, pretending not to know Noah, and Max was all over her. Later, Noah was helping an obviously drunken Max on to a cab. He returned to the club to find Alison, where they danced and made out in public. The two later took this further at a hotel and were intimate quite a number of times.
While talking a shower, Noah discussed the fact that he’ll be leaving Montauk in a week. What were they to do about this? Noah came up with some suggestions about visiting Alison when he would be working on his novel.
Alison: I’d be your mistress.
Noah: I hate that word.
Alison: What would you prefer?
Alison got ready to dress up. Apparently, Cole will be home early. Noah curiously asked if they were still having sex, but she was coy about it. When Alison declined Noah’s offer to bring her home and when he saw that she took a different route, he followed her. Alison emerged later carrying this cooler (which viewers have seen in an earlier episode) as she headed off to a drop-off point at the taxi dispatch with Caleb Lockhart (Michael Godere).
Noah went home and slipped in bed with Helen (Maura Tierney), but sometime later, he was woken up by his wife. They cannot find their son Martin. A call to the Lockhart ranch, and they confirmed that Martin was there early in the morning to begin his work. Later, as Noah was swimming in the pool, he asked his eldest daughter where to get cocaine around the town. Whitney was shocked her father would ask her that. It’s for his book, he said.
Helen talked to him about family stuff and the kids. The therapist needed them to be at Whitney’s session, which would probably do their relationship some good. He’s been distant from her, and Helen’s feeling old and unwanted. Helen suggested having sex tonight. She was going to buy some candles.
The family was dining at the shack with Max, with Alison attending to another table. Max recognized her, and Helen remembered her from their first visit. Noah told Max she’s married. Helen had this look that wondered how Noah knew of this.
Helping his youngest daughter take a bathroom break later, Alison came up to Noah, and they started kissing. His family was just outside the premises, and his youngest child was a few steps in there. What were they thinking? Noah and his daughter returned to the table and found Max crying, telling Helen how he missed his family.
The rest of the family were going to play mini-golf afterwards, so Noah was left at the shack. He invited Oscar (Darren Goldstein) for drinks. They were observing Alison, and Oscar casually said that he was the first guy to have sex with her in high school. Sometime later, Scotty Lockhart (Colin Donnell) came in and demanded payment from Oscar. The incident got heated and physical, leading Oscar to call the police to alert them about suspicious activity — drugs most likely. Oscar snitched the Lockharts. Oscar said they were dealers. The ranch was a front.
Noah went to the ranch to talk to Alison about her possibly dealing drugs and also to warn her that Oscar called the police. Alison wasted no time and told Cole, so the Lockharts decided to clean up.
Noah went home disgusted. He’s an adulterer, but drugs drew the line, apparently. He found Helen fixing the bed and initiated the most passionate sex ever.
Alison woke up in Phoebe’s house with Noah. This was the morning after the party. In her story, she showered alone. They had none of that mistress-concubine conversation. She told Noah she had to leave and was later at the docks to get that familiar blue cooler from a new guy. Then Alison brought the cooler to Caleb, who told her to relax about the new guy. They both agreed it was weird though.
So yes, the Lockharts were drug dealers, and Alison was their mule.
Going to the ranch afterwards, Alison found Cole (Joshua Jackson) with a new horse, Elizabeth Taylor, who was stubborn but majestic, just like his wife. Alison found Martin, Noah’s son, sleeping at one of the stables. He’s been there this whole time? It was evident that the Lockharts were fond of the young boy, so when Alison received a call from Helen (in Noah’s storyline, it was him who called), she assured her that the boy was fine.
Alison: That was Martin’s mom. She had no clue he was here. She didn’t even ask to speak to him. She was barely even worried.
Cherry (mother-in-law): She called, Alison.
Alison: Her son slept here last night. She barely noticed he’s gone?
Cherry: She has four children. She might have a bit on her mind.
Alison: No, she doesn’t. She’s rich.
Later, Alison watched as Cole taught Martin how to ride a horse. There was sadness in her face. Perhaps reflecting the fact that Cole can never be able to do this father-son bonding stuff with Gabriel gone. Getting to her bike, she found a note from Noah, which said to meet her at Phoebe’s house. There, he confessed he followed her. He wanted to know where she headed and what was in that cooler?
Noah: You deal fucking coke? You know how stupid that is? You know what happens to you when you get caught? What the hell are you doing?
Alison: I don’t fucking care what happens to me, don’t you get it? I don’t fucking care if I live or die, or go to jail or space. I don’t give a shit.
Apparently, there’s an even darker side to Alison. Losing Gabriel meant she was ready to throw her life away. But she wasn’t using drugs. They have rules at the Lockharts.
Noah told Alison about what she heard from Oscar, so she hurried back to the ranch to warn, Cole and the Lockharts cleaned up. Cole told his wife to stay put. If they were gonna get caught with the drugs, he didn’t want her with them. Alison instead went to the taxi dispatch with Caleb, and later, Oscar came to them. Caleb accused him of being a snitch. Alison heard him call the police. Oscar looked surprised coz it was Noah who was there when he made the call, which turned out to be a bluff. Caleb left to tell Cole, and his other brothers that Oscar was only bluffing. When Caleb left, Oscar suggested that if Alison really wanted to be shacking up with someone (Noah), she should have done it with him. He got a slap from her.
Back at the ranch, the brothers were discussing, agreeing to have Oscar set up his bowling alley so he would shut up about the drugs. Alison begged Cole they have to stop about doing drugs because someone else would turn them in, if it wasn’t Oscar. But where are they gonna get 100k? Alison suggested selling the ranch.
Alison: Let’s be honest Cole, we’re miserable here. We could start new lives. We could finally move on.
Cole: Move on from what? Say it. I want to hear you say it. There is no moving on.
Martin interrupted them though, because Elizabeth Taylor got away, and the Lockharts had to find the mare. Alison drove Martin home and got a chance to talk to Noah, who told her that this thing they have together was over.
Alison: I want to start over. With you.
Noah: I should be insane to keep this thing going. We’re leaving at the end of next week anyway, so let’s just end it now.
Alison was crushed.
