The Last Ship Recap: Unreal City
“The Last Ship” Season 2 Episode 1 “Unreal City” aired on Sunday, June 21, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on TNT. In this episode, Commander Tom Chandler (Eric Dane), Lt. Danny Green (Travis van Winkle) and Lt. Carlton Burk (Jocko Sims), after shutting down a power plant generated by burning the dead bodies of the sick, teamed up with the warlord leader Thorwald (Titus Welliver) in order to launch an attack against Amy Granderson (Alfre Woodard), who was the mastermind behind killing people indiscriminately. Meanwhile, an injured Master Chief Hugh Jeter (Charles Parnell) looked for medicine for Chandler’s son who had come down with a fever. Back at Avocet, Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) was rescued by Tex Nolan (John Pyper-Furguson), but their plans were put on hold as Lt. Kara Foster (Marissa Neitling) had been brought in to work out some kind of vaccine from her unborn child as those on the USS Nathan James refused to give up the primordial strain, while some of the crew worked to slip away to take back the ship. Read on to learn more about this episode.
As the crew of the USS Nathan James, who had been tied up, was ushered into the hangar to be watched over, Chief Engineer Andrea Garnett (Fay Masterson) told Petty Officer Third Class O’ Connor (Paul James), Cruz (Ness Bautista) and Seaman Miller (Kevin Michael Martin) not to make a move. He also told Kelly Tophet (Alice Coulthard) to tell the officers boarding them to say that they had been picked up on the same fishing boat as Bertrise (Hope Olaide Wilson). However, O’ Connor managed to jump off the ship and slipped back to engineering and made the engine thermostat hot, so that everyone in the hangar would feel hot. Garnett then began to bargain that they be moved to the mess hall, as the others began to pretend to start a riot.
They then sent Lt. Junior Grade Andy Chung (Andy T. Tran) to fix the thermostat of the engines. Garnett stalled before entering the mess hall so that Cruz and Miller could slip away to join O’ Connor so that they could get to the armory and gear up.
Up on the bridge, Doc Rios (Maximiliano Hernandez) was summoned to help stabilize Dr. Quincy Tophet (Sam Spruell) who was the only person aside from Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) who could recreate the vaccine. Thankfully, Rios managed to smuggle the primordial strain into his medical bag before Dr. Hamada (Marcus Choi) and the soldiers came in. They did managed to stabilize him, but no one seemed keen to reveal where the primordial strain was.
Meanwhile, on land, at the Olympia Sports Arena, Commander Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) and Lt. Carlton Burk (Jocko Sims) got Chandler’s family out by hijacking a truck that belonged to Avocet, Amy Granderson’s (Alfre Woodard) company. They then met up with Lt. Danny Green (Travis van Winkle) and an injured Master Chief Hugh Jeter (Charles Parnell), who showed Chandler that Granderson had taken their boat.
Jeter then stayed behind and took care of Chandler’s family, which led to him finding them a house. He left them for a moment in order to find medicine for Chandler’s son, Sam (Aidan Sussman), who had come down with a bad fever.
Meanwhile, Green, Chandler and Burk managed to slip into the power plant, gained control of it. They discovered one of the men of Thorwald (Titus Welliver), the leader of the warlords or rebels, who were against Granderson. They were then shown the people who lived under their protection- healthy civilians who had been rejected as they were not useful enough.
They then teamed up to attack Avocet from it’s sub basement. Green waited for the signal to shut the plant down, removing electricity from the city so that Granderson would negotiate with them.
Back on the ship, it was discovered that Kelly and Ava Tophet (Jade Pettyjohn) were Quincy’s family. However, instead of giving up the strain, he bled to death. Hamada then discovered that Lt. Kara Foster’s (Marissa Neitling) baby was immune and decided to use the baby’s stem cells instead to make the vaccine. They then locked up Executive Officer Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin), who then escaped into the ship from a hidden hatch.
Granderson then tried to convince her daughter, Lt. Junior Grade Alisha Granderson (Christina Elmore) to join her but didn’t succeed. Granderson allowed Rachel to administer the vaccine to some of the infected.
Later, Tex Nolan (John Pyper-Ferguson), who had managed to snag a security job at Avocet rescued Rachel, and the two decided to save Kara, before rescuing Alisha.
