The Legend of Korra Recap: Beyond the Wilds
“The Legend of Korra” Season 4 Episode 9 “Beyond the Wilds” aired last Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, on the Nickelodeon website and application. In this episode, Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) went on a journey of self- acceptance that allowed her to regain her full powers as the Avatar. She tried to free the spirits of Ryu, Jinora (Kiernan Shipka) and the others who had gotten trapped by the vines in the Spirit Wilds. It was due to the disturbance that Kuvira (Zelda Williams) was causing by harvesting the vines at the swamp. Meanwhile, the world leaders met in order to discuss what was to be done about Kuvira. Lin Bei Fong (Mindy Sterling) and Opal (Alyson Stoner) planned to free their family from Kuvira, and Bolin (P.J. Byrne) and Varrick (John Michael Higgins) finally rejoined the group in Republic City. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with Ryu, an Airbender from the Earth Kingdom, who was being visited by his parents at his new workplace. He was now a tour guide for the Spirit Wilds located in Republic City. While giving the tour, the spirit vines, all of a sudden attacked the group and trapped the group inside.
Meanwhile, at Air Temple Island, while Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) practiced her earth-bending skills, she saw Opal (Alyson Stoner), who looked worried. She then told Korra that it seemed as if nobody cared about her family, who had been taken captive by Kuvira (Zelda Williams) in Zaofu. Their conversation was then interrupted by Jinora (Kiernan Shipka), who told Korra that she had felt a weird surge of energy from the Spirit Wilds. When they got there, after Korra touched one of the vines, she saw that Kuvira and her mecha tanks were harvesting the Spirit Vines. Korra then deduced that that was what affected the Spirit Wilds. Opal saw this as a great opportunity to convince President Raiko and the others that Kuvira must be taken down. Korra and Opal then decided to go to Raiko while Jinora stayed behind in the Wilds to look for the others.
President Raiko (Spencer Garrett), Tenzin (J.K. Simmons), Prince Wu (Sunil Malhotra), and Fire Lord Izumi (April Stewart), Lord Zuko’s daughter, met to discuss what they should do in order to stop Kuvira. Prince Wu, who was being guarded by Mako (David Faustino), gave useless suggestions to take down Kuvira. However, Tenzin did not want to attack Kuvira, even if they knew that she couldn’t be trusted. They were then interrupted by Korra and Opal, who burst in upon the meeting. Korra was then shocked that Prince Wu had been invited, and she had not been invited. Tenzin then reassured her that the reason why they did not invite her was because they believed that it might be too soon to involve her in such matters. Before Korra could say another word, they were interrupted by Bolin (P.J. Byrne) and Varrick (John Michael Higgins), who had finally made it to Republic City. They managed to not be arrested as traitors. Varrick and Bolin revealed that Kuvira was making a super weapon using the spirit vines.
Because of this, Raiko wanted to do a pre-emptive strike against Kuvira, but both Lord Izumi and Tenzin refused to participate. However, they decided to help Raiko out as he had changed his mind, and decided to go on the defensive instead.
Afterwards, Bolin tried to follow Opal in order to ask for forgiveness for what he had done to her and her family. However, they were quickly interrupted by Lin Bei Fong (Mindy Sterling). She told Opal that they would have no choice but to go on an unsanctioned mission to rescue Su Being (Anne Heche) and the others themselves.
Mako and Korra then met up with Bolin. She was relieved to learn that they still loved and trusted him. Korra then told him that she should be the one not to be trusted. She felt that she had lost everyone’s trust after she had been beaten by Kuvira. However, Mako and Bolin told her that they still trusted and needed her.
Meanwhile, after Jinora discovered a broken camera that one of the tourist’s had been holding earlier, she was attacked by a spirit vine. Before she could truly be trapped, she projected her spirit to where Korra was, and told her that the vines were taking her. Lin then quickly set a perimeter around the Wilds and asked someone to get Tenzin. She then reluctantly allowed Mako and Korra to go inside the Wilds in a bid to rescue Jinora and the others. After entering an old building which they had hid in to escape the vines, they discovered that Jinora and the others’ spirits were being held captive in the spirit world. Korra failed to bind the spirit vines and to enter the Spirit World. The events of what Zaheer (Henry Rollins) had done to her three years ago continued to haunt her.
Afterwards, she told Tenzin that she felt that she had to see Zaheer in his prison in person. She could try to forget everything that had happened, so that he would no longer block her powers. Tenzin started to suggest that Korra’s father could “lead an expedition into the Spirit World from the South Pole,” but upon Korra’s insistence. She felt that they had lost faith in her. Then he decided to get her the clearance she needed to go to Zaheer’s prison deep in the mountains.
Meanwhile, Bolin, who was finally reunited with Pabu, used him in order to lure Opal to go to him, where he had laid out a picnic spread for her. She had initially run to him as the note on Pabu said that Bolin had broken both his legs. However, after learning that it was just a ruse, she became angry and told him that the picnic would not be enough to make her forget that he had worked for Kuvira, the woman who had captured her family.
Meanwhile, President Raiko asked Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel) and Varrick to work together. It was done to create a counter weapon of sorts that would allow them to stop Kuvira’s super weapon, just in case.
At the prison, Korra told Mako that she believed that if she saw that Zaheer was chained up, she might see that he’s not a threat anymore. She then insisted that she go inside alone.
Inside, she saw that Zaheer was meditating and floating in the air. He told her that he knew that she was coming and proved to her that she was still scared of him. He told her that she was blaming him as he was just a crutch that’s stopping you from recovering. Korra that she was actually very powerful as she had fought the poison that should have killed her. He then told her that he knew that she was there because she could not get into the Spirit World and offered to help her. At that moment, they both wanted to stop Kuvira from gaining power. As she had nothing to lose from it, she decided to let him help her.
As soon as she started meditating, the events of three years ago — of Zaheer attacking her — played out in her mind once again. He told her to let it play out, to accept it and not to be afraid. Thanks to that, she was able to break into the Spirit World. Before he vanished, he told her that she knew exactly where Jinora and the others were. All of a sudden, her eyes glowed, and she felt Raava (April Stewart), the spirit of light, within her. Raava then revealed to her that she had been within Korra all along. She led her to where Jinora and the others were trapped. She then revealed to Korra that she was actually more powerful inside the Spirit World. She could connect to all the spiritual energy there and was told to bend the energy within the sphere holding their spirits. Her eyes glowed as she touched it and bent its energy, which allowed Jinora and the other to be released.
Outside the prison, Korra told Mako that she felt strong and whole again. She was finally able to accept what had happened to her, which she knew would make her stronger.
Meanwhile, back on Air Temple Island, Bolin discovered that Opal and Lin were going to take care of some family business. Bolin then apologized to her and told her that even if she never forgave him. He would never stop trying to win her back as he loved her. Opal then told him that there was one big gesture that he could do for her — to accompany them back to Zaofu to rescue her family. Bolin then agreed to go.
