So You Think You Can Dance: First Live Show- How Did The Top 20 Do?
The first live show for “So You Think You Can Dance” for Season 12 aired last Monday, July 13, 2015 at 8:00 PM on Fox. In this episode, viewers and fans of the show and of dance were treated to a new format for the show – each team, Team Street and Team Stage, were given an opportunity to showcase their strengths before they go on to compete with different teammates, and different dance styles. In this explosive new format, Team Stage and Team Street claimed the stage, and earned either standing ovations or notes for improvement.
In the “So You Think You Can Think You Can Dance” mentor blogs, both team captains, tWitch and Travis Wall gave their own opinions of the night, and Gold Derby came out with several predictions as to who are running strong in the competition, and as to who are the weak links. Read on to learn more about the first live show of the season, to find out what the team captains thought of their teammate’s performances, and to learn some predictions as to who might get cut out of the competition.
During the show, judges Paula Abdul, Nigel Lythgoe, and Jason Derulo sat through the performances of their top twenty performers, in an interesting new format where in Team Street and Team Stage were given a chance to shine in their particular genres before mixing everything up.
For Team Stage, the judges loved two of their performances. The first one that they liked was the routine choreographed by Stacey Tookey for Moises Parra, Gaby Diaz and Derek Piquette, which was set to Max Richter’s “Luminous”. They also loved the performance of ballet boys Jim Nowakowski and Darion Flores, who performed a Benoit Swan Pouffer number to “Blood and Stone” by Audiomachine. They weren’t impressed by Kate Harpooltlian and Edson Juarez’s performance which was choreographed by Team Stage mentor Travis Wall, but according to his mentor blog on Entertainment Weekly, he thought that they did well.
For Team Street, the judges loved the powerful performance of Lily Frias, Jaja Vankova, Burim Jusufi and Asaf Goren, which had been choreographed by Christopher Scott set to the tune of “Easy (Switch Screens) by Son Lux feat. Lorde; and Pharside’s and Phoenix’s routine for Virgil Gadson, Yorelis Apolinario and Ariana Crowder, which was set to Burno Mars “Locked Out of Heaven, which Team Stage Captain Travis Wall loved as well, according his mentor blog on Entertainment Weekly.
For Team Street Captain tWitch, in his mentor blog on Entertainment Weekly, he thought that Stacey Tookey’s number was beautiful, and loved the powerful Christopher Scott routine, and the team number that Team Street had at the end.
At the end of the night, due to a powerful NappyTabs number, the judges declared Team Street the winners for that show, instead of Warren Carlyle’s Bob Fosse inspired number.
According to both mentors, in their blogs, they both know that the upcoming week will be challenging for them especially as one member each from Team Stage and Team Street will have to be sent home.
Travis also mentioned that the upcoming week will be quite interesting as “B-boy” Asaf Goren will be paired with a dancer from Team Stage.
According to Gold Derby, a site that gives out predictions as to who are the weak links and the strong running candidates, ballet boy Jim Nowakowski seems like the obvious front runner for Team Stage, while Virgil Gadson might give the others a run for their money with his unique personality.
