Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s George Clooney Joke at the Golden Globes Is Spot On [WATCH VIDEO]
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made a joke on George Clooney at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards, and their “trophy husband” peg hit the nail right on the head.
“Saturday Night Live” BFFs Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted this year’s Golden Globe Awards, where they spared nothing and no one from their ridicule-filled monologue, not even A-lister George Clooney, who was a Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement awardee that night.
Fey and Poehler, who have hosted the Golden Globes three years in a row now, heaped praise on Clooney’s badass wife, British barrister Amal Clooney, while inferring that George, who starred in last year’s “The Monuments Men,” is a mere “trophy husband.”
“George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year,” Fey began, as published on Buzzfeed. “Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an adviser to Kofi Annan regarding Syria, and was selected for a three-person U.N. commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip. So tonight, her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.”
The audience broke into laughter and applause, and while Clooney, who wore his wedding tux at the event, guffawed at the joke, his new wife sat by his side with an enigmatic smile on her face.
This isn’t the first time Fey and Poehler have made fun of the Oscar winner. The year before, they ragged him about his penchant for dating younger women.
This year, however, his younger woman just happens to be a more accomplished wife, thus setting the tone (and perhaps the trend) for “trophy husbands.” Because even if George is a pretty good and outstandingly accomplished actor, Amal takes the cake for having achieved milestones towards making concrete changes in the world’s social, political and economic climates.
And what is the shallowness of Hollywood compared to all that?
