Togetherness Recap: Houston, We Have a Problem
“Togetherness” Season 1 Episode 4 “Houston, We Have a Problem” aired on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on HBO. Alex and Tina are on a trip to Houston, while Brett and Michelle have a date night at a hotel. It didn’t go well for either pairs. Find out what happened in the recap below.
On the plane to Houston, Tina (Amanda Peet) talks on the phone with her boyfriend Larry, while Alex (Steve Zissis) sits next to her. When she hangs up, she tells him that when they return home, they should hang-out together with her boyfriend. Alex acts uninterested about it, making Tina wonder what it is up with him.
Brett (Mark Duplass) brings his wife Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) out for date night. They’re having dinner at this fancy restaurant, which they haven’t done in a long time, and he suggests that they should plan an overnight trip next time. Michelle agrees and says it’s a nice gesture. But as her husband is full of surprises tonight, he tells her that he actually has a room booked already.
In Houston, Alex meets Tina’s parents, who gives him Rogaine from Mexico to thank him for everything he’s done for Tina and for looking after her in California. Later, Tina receives a call from a frantic Michelle. She’s inside the hotel bathroom and her husband wants to have sex. What does she do? Tina orders her sister to do it and go wild with Brett. Alex overhears the conversation and laughs.
At the hotel room, everything looks erotic. Michelle tells her husband that he did something really nice and sweet, but he sees that she’s not comfortable. So, he suggests that they watch bad movies in bed instead. He can take sex off the table.
Tina and Alex are at a bar in Houston. He’s with some of Tina’s girlfriends, and they’re having a lot of fun. One of the ladies asks Alex to dance and sparks are happening. The other women think they’re cute together. Tina seems pleased by this, at first. Later, Tina finds a guy to dance with and positions herself beside Alex and his partner Pam. She taunts them for a dance showdown. But whatever Tina is trying to achieve, Alex only has eyes for Pam.
Back at the hotel, Brett and Michelle cuddle while watching TV. When this was over, Michelle says they should have sex now. They start undressing and kissing. But the sex looks uncomfortable. It’s not going well. After 10 years together, they fumble and lose their way around each other. They start to debate about what they should do in bed that they lose the momentum. This pisses off Brett, and they argue.
Brett tells Michelle that he could sense that his wife is dreading to have sex with him. Michelle denies this. He admits that he feels the same way. Being with the same partner for that long, he’s just trying to make thing work. Brett leaves the room in a huff. He holes up in the hotel bathroom. Michelle follows him after a few minutes, and he starts apologizing to her. Michelle’s voice breaks when she realizes their marriage is in trouble. They start to cry together, and she suggests they go to therapy.
Back at the bar, it’s quite late, and Tina tells Alex that they should go home. But he’s got plans with the girl he’s with. Tina still tells him they should go anyway. Besides, Alex needs to drive for her because she’s drunk. He’s going to have to hook up with Pam the next time he’s in town. They attempt to kiss, but Tina blows the car horn to distract them.
While driving, Tina tells Alex where to go and where to stop, until he’s had enough of her bossing him around. He rants to her about this and even calls her out for cock-blocking him with Pam. Tina laughs it off. What is he talking about? She tells him he cannot sleep with her friends because she feels weird about it. Alex is confused — why would Tina feel weird?
Back at the hotel, Michelle and Brett couldn’t sleep, so they end up talking. Both agree that they don’t want any divorce.
Back at her parents’ house, Tina wakes up Alex on the couch and apologizes for cock-blocking him. She wants to make up to him by giving him a hand job, and they both laugh when they realize it’s a joke. Instead, she gives Alex a hug and thanks him for coming to Houston and being her friend.
