‘Underworld’ Reboot in the Works

Lakeshore Entertainment has announced that it will develop a reboot on the popular vampire-werewolf clash action franchise, “Underworld.” Read on to learn more about this story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lakeshore Entertainment will develop a reboot on its horror-action franchise, “Underworld.” The reboot will be produced by Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi, hiring scribe Cory Goodman to write the script.

“Underworld” is a series of action-horror films featuring vampires and werewolves, spanning to four titles, the “Underworld” (2003), “Underworld: Evolution” (2006), prequel “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” (2009) and “Underworld: Awakening” (2012). The films were directed helmers by Len Wiseman, Patrick Tatopoulos, Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein respectively.

In “Underworld,” vampires and Lycans/werewolves are not supernatural creatures, rather products of a virus. It follows the story of Selene, played by actress Kate Beckinsale, a death dealer bent on destroying the Lycans who allegedly killed her family. She later develops feelings for Michael Corvin, played by Scott Speedman, the first Lycan-vampire hybrid in the mythos, as they are caught between a war of races — vampires, Lycans and humans.

Although given an overall negative critical review by Rotten Tomatoes — “Underworld” with 31 percent, “Underworld: Evolution” with 16 percent, “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” with 30 percent and “Underworld: Awakening” with 33 percent — the four films, with a $177 M budget, earned a global box office return of $458.2 million. A fifth film titled “Underworld: Next Generation” is in works and is set to be released by 2015.

Goodman has written scripts for films such as Paul Bettany’s “Priest.” He also wrote the script for Vin Diesel’s latest pic “The Last Witch Hunter,” which is currently in production and is directed by Breck Eisner. Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama with Mark Canton, Bernie Goldmann and Diesel will serve as producers and Samantha Vincent and Adam Goldworm as executive producers. It stars Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood and “Game of Thrones” actress Rose Leslie and Michael Caine. Lionsgate will release the film in North America through its Summit Entertainment banner.
