Previously on “The Vampire Diaries” (“Promised Land” Season 5 Episode 21), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) captured one of Markos’ (Raffi Barsoumian) Travelers, Mr. Sykes. The gang must find out where Markos brought Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Elena Dobrev). However, it was too late for Damon. The spell had started. In fact, it has taken its toll on Stefan and Elena as their daylight rings would not work. When the two reached the Grill, they stayed in the tunnels. Both of them were feeling their human deaths. They found Matt (Zach Roerig) to help them.

Luke (Chris Brochu) and Liv (Penelope Mitchell) screwed up. They failed on keeping the doppelgangers from Markos in order to save the Other Side. The only solution to their problem was to kill Stefan and Elena.

Moreover, a woman named Maria (Tamara Austin) took Stefan and Elena with her—they needed a ride—and brought them back to Mystic Falls. She planned to snatch Julian then leave.

Back to Damon . . . he did a little research in the Mystic Falls about the people who were once inhabited by Travelers. Caroline (Candice Accola) questioned Tyler (Michael Trevino), but she did not get anything. As for Damon, he managed to lure Markos to come to him as he came searching for his missing Travelers.

Then Caroline came up with an idea, and that was to kill Tyler to get Julian from the Other Side. Bonnie (Kat Graham) stopped her from pushing this idea. She revealed the truth about the Other Side. This meant that Enzo (Michael Malarkey) could not come back to life anymore. He convinced himself by saying, “There’s always a solution.”

The Travelers proceeded with their incantation. Some were falling to the ground, as if they were dead. Bonnie came up with a plan, but she needed Maria. Enzo tried to look for her. When he did find her, she was jerked away.  Julian saw Stefan and Caroline and was enraged with the news. He blamed Stefan for Maria’s death. When they try to pacify him, he snatched Stefan’s heart. Bonnie saw Stefan, and she delivered to him the bad news: they were doomed on the Other Side.
