Van Damme Returns to the Big Screen in Expendables 2
Expendables 2 features Sylvester Stallone against Jean Claude Van Damme. It is the matchup that action fans have been asking for since the 1980s and early 1990s, when both action superstars were in their heyday.
Van Damme is already 51 years old and is making his Hollywood comeback after his battle with drugs and a bipolar disorder. Expendables 2 is a special movie for him as he share screen time with Stallone, Chuck Norris, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He confessed that it was a dream come true for him as he remembered watching his co-star’s movies with his father at the local Belgian cinema.
Expendables 2 earned an estimated $28.8 million this weekend to get the top spot of the box office chart. Van Damme used to play the good guy in movies, such as Bloodsport, Cyborg and Kickboxer. But in Expendables 2, he plays the evil Jean Vilain, a man who controls a plutonium mine and sells it to the highest bidder.
Stallone said that he wanted Van Damme for the first Expendables movie in 2010 but the Belgian actor was busy directing his own film. Stallone said that Can Damme has what it takes and even if he had his ups and downs, all he needs to do is to reignite it.
Van Damme still has the moves. The final battle between Vilain and Stallone’s Barney Ross showcased the two characters’ different fighting styles. Van Damme surprised skeptical director Simon West and stuntmen when he did the 360 degree kick that he first introduced in Bloodsport 25 years ago. Actually, Van Damme was also surprised that he was able to pull it off. He added that when the viewers see the 360 kicks in the air on the big screen, they could see the veins bulging because it is real.
