The Week in Movies: ‘Scorch Trials’ Blazes Through the Box Office But ‘Black Mass’ Not Dark Enough?

Universal’s “Maze Runner: Scorch Trials” lived up to this name as it blazed through the box office this weekend, with Johnny Depp vehicle “Black Mass” following at its heels. “Everest,” “Sicario” and “Pawn Sacrifice” also opened in the box this week. Here’s our list of the top box office picks of the weekend, read on to find out more.

This weekend, Universal Studio’s “The Scorch Trials” proved its merit as it opened in theaters at the number one box office spot. Despite poor reviews, (One critic called it “just a pile of images and ideas stolen from smarter people’s second-hand bin banged into each other for a numbingly dull 132 minutes.”), the “Maze Runner” sequel is doing well amongst viewers, raking in a cool $30.3 million on its first weekend run. The first film of the series had debuted at $32.5 million exactly one year ago.

On the other end of the spectrum is Johnny Depp’s violent crime thriller based on the life of Boston mob boss, Whitey Bulger. While Depp is being praised for his stark portrayal of the gangster, the movie itself opened right behind “Scorch Trails” making $23.3 million this weekend.

The week also saw the partial opening of another Universal film, Baltasar Kormakur’s mountaineering adventure, “Everest.” Though “Everest” opened only at IMAX and large-screen theaters this week, it has made a decent $7.5 million. Being called “the Gravity of mountain climbing,” “Everest” is doing well among critics. This is in advance of its worldwide premiere at the Venice Film Festival, when takings are hoped to pick up even more. “Everest” is number five on this weekend’s box-office

Two smaller movies, Denis Villenueve’s “Sicario” and Edward Zwick’s “Pawn Sacrifice” also opened in theaters this week, and both have been received well by critics. Opening in 33 theaters, “Pawn Sacrifice” made a respectable $206 thousand. “Sicario,” on the other hand, opened with a whopping $390 thousand from just six theaters. We expect more takings as it opens in more theaters over the next two weeks.
