“12 Monkeys” Season 1 Episode 3 “Cassandra Complex” aired on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. Syfy. Cole and Railly return to 2014 to seek out a very important doctor. As Goines puts it, he’s “the one who got away.” Read on for the recap.
The episode opens with Railly (Amanda Schull) aiming a gun at Cole (Aaron Stanford). The two are doing target practice so that Railly can better prepare herself, in case they will come in contact with the Army of the 12 Monkeys again. But Railly receives a call from the police. They want her to come to the precinct to discuss Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire) who recently escaped the mental facility as Railly was signing off on Cole.
The police tells Railly that Goines is quite dangerous as she has killed the team of doctors and scientists at her father’s lab. One of these includes the person she and Cole are looking for, the one who got away. She knows the real story of course, but she Railly cooperates with the police to gain more information. In secret, Railly snaps a photo and sends it to Cole. They now know who the guy they should be looking for.
Railly tells Cole that he’s Henri Toussaint (Lyriq Bent), a doctor she worked with in Haiti for the Center for Disease Control (CDC). In order to learn of his current whereabouts, Railly, in the 2015, returned to CDC to ask a colleague, but she’s told that Dr. Henri died shortly after she sent him on a medical run the previous year. She was not aware of this because she also left the CDC quickly after having a breakdown. Cole is determined to travel back to 2014 to talk to Henri.
So in the present day (2043), they set the plan in motion. But Cole is warned by Jones (Barbara Sukowa) to never come in contact with Railly in 2014, as this will lead to a fractured timeline, which may kill him. He’s also told that the time travel is causing a few temporal interference, which means Cole could appear and disappear on location, and he could have a nosebleed because of it.
It’s 2014, and Railly is arguing with her boyfriend Aaron (Noah Bean) about leaving Haiti. He’s worried that she’s not in the right frame of mind, having recovered from her strange encounter with Cole the previous year. But, it’s precisely why she has to go to Haiti, to check and see if this is the virus Cole told her about.
She arrives to the island and sees chaos everywhere. There are far too many people sick, and some have gone violent, demanding for cure. Railly wants the place locked down, but the head of the CDC is still not keen on it. There, she meets Henri and they immediately bond, both professionally and personally. One drunken night while going over case files, Henri and Railly actually sleep together.
Meanwhile, armed men attack the CDC clinic and steal some vital medicines just as Cole arrives in this timeline and begins to look for Henri. The doctor volunteers to see someone about a stash of medical supplies to replace the ones that were stolen, so Railly sends him out to gather these.
As he heads out, Henri senses he’s being followed, but he corners Cole, thinking he’s from the Army of the 12 Monkeys, and he’s there to kill him. Cole tells him that he’s only there to ask Henri questions about the night room at the Goines’ laboratory, and Henri promises that he will reveal everything after he delivers the medicine back at the clinic.
Cole accompanies Henri to his medical source. They come across a spot, a peculiar shrine with the monkey’s head as its focal center, as they make their way into the labyrinth of alleys in Haiti. Henri tells Cole that they were researching about a DNA virus that could become medicine when they were attacked at the Goines’ laboratory.
Just then, the mysterious man, now dubbed as the Pallid Man (Tom Noonan), appears and Cole fights him off as Henri makes his run. Somehow, Cole’s temporal interference helps in evading the blows from Pallid Man. Cole unexpectedly slices his cheek, causing Pallid Man to leave.
Once the coast is clear, Cole again presses Henri for the information on the night room, but Henri actually doesn’t know its exact location. Cole can still look for this, though, if he’s able to find a special equipment used to keep the samples intact. This equipment has a tracker and a devise that will destroy the room should the virus accidentally escape. So, if they are able to locate this tracker, they will be able to locate the night room.
The encounter with Pallid Man earlier should’ve actually caused Henri’s death, so essentially, Cole changes the timeline for him, and it’s not the way it should have played out. Without any choice, Cole shoots Henri as this is what is supposed to happen in history. In the 2015 timeline, Cole actually lies to Railly, telling her that he didn’t see who it was who killed her friend.
Meanwhile, as this is happening, Railly goes on panic mode when they could not contain the virus that is spreading fast among the patients. She realizes that this may already be the big plague Cole told her about in their first encounter, and in her paranoia, she orders to shoot down anyone who tries to leave the clinic. It gets the best of her for as it turns out, it’s only a case of river fever, from which the CDC has a cure. One of the doctors grows concern over Railly’s state of mind. Maybe it’s time she heads back to home, or she’s going to have a breakdown.
As she’s pondering on her behavior and paranoia outside the clinic, Railly notices flashes of light. In the 2015 timeline, she asks Cole if it was him back then, and he confirms it.
In the present timeline, Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) goes outside of the complex to check into reports of a group of scavengers that have been attacking people. Along with the soldier Whitley, whom Ramse doesn’t get along with, they came across Max (Romina D’ Ugo). She attacks Whitley and surprisingly, Ramse helps her knock him out. Turns out, the two know each other, having been part of a former faction together with Cole. Ramse demands from her to spill on what is going on.
Max tells him that she has been AWOL from their group, the West 7, and Ramse believes her. She seeks for shelter from him, as their leader Deacon is probably gunning for her. Ramse says that she can head to a small town where he knows she will be taken care of, and that’s all he can do for her. But Max, is in fact, only spying for Deacon and upon return to her group, she tells the leader that she has found Ramse, and she also knows Cole is with him.
