12 Monkeys Recap: The Red Forest
Aaron Stanford at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con

12 Monkeys” Season 1 Episode 6 “The Red Forest” aired on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. Syfy. Cole and Aaron, Cassie’s boyfriend, have to work together to save her and bring the timeline order back. Find out what happened in the episode in the recap below.

Following his last transport, Cole (Aaron Stanford) realizes that he’s in an alternate world in 2043. The center is overrun with West Seven refugees and Jones (Barbara Sukowa) is not the head scientist. There are no research works being done as the people aren’t doing anything much but survive. Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) is the one in charge and he’s pretty badass.

They don’t welcome Cole immediately, because apparently, Ramse watched him die in this timeline. Is he an impostor? When all things come together, they realize what is happening and thinks that Cole has to get back to 2015. He has to make sure Cassie (Amanda Schull) doesn’t die after getting abducted in the Night Room, or else this alternate timeline becomes their reality. In this alternate world, the virus apparently started in Chechnya during Operation Troy. Cassie doesn’t exist anymore, nor the CDC and the Goines. They’ve all died in 2015.

As they’re getting ready to use the time machine, which hasn’t been fully functional for a while now, Whitley, one of the guards, tries to stop them by shooting Jones. He believes that turning on the machine will drain the center of its power for good and he doesn’t want to risk this. Not with so many people living in the center. But Ramse snaps the guard’s neck. Jones scrambles off to get Cole to 2015.

Cole successfully returns to 2015. But since he can’t stop Cassie’s abduction in the Night Room as he will get to see his other self. Thus altering the timeline again, he approaches Aaron (Noah Bean), Cassie’s former boyfriend for help. Because Aaron has a different perception of Cole, it’s pretty hard to convince him. But it’s Cassie’s safety that matters, so the two set aside their differences first. Besides, Cole has mentioned something about Operation Troy. It seems Aaron knows to be a top secret project he’s looking into in the senate. How did the guy know about this?

Without a concrete plan, Cole and Aaron infiltrate the Night Room. They are hoping to stop the Pallid Man (Thomas Noonan) and his goons. The encounter, however, wounds Cole. Something happens to him that jogs his memory to Jones cleaning his wounds and nursing him back to health. Does this mean the timeline has been corrected?

Still, they can’t save Cassie from being abducted, but they were able to track the van via its license plate. It leads them to a warehouse. Cole and Aaron ambush the guards and find Cassie safe and alive. She’s being interrogated by the Pallid Man and someone who identifies himself as the Witness. There’s also a woman who sounds like she’s the Pallid Man’s superior. She tells him Cassie cannot die yet, but they do drug her and she trips out. She believes she’s in a house in the red forest.

Cassie hears a voice and a figure in a gas mask. It’s the Witness. She’s speaking to him in her hallucination, but viewers can see that he’s actually silent in another room. Cassie is trying to fight off the drug and shakes the hallucinations, when Cole and Aaron break into the facility to take her. They couldn’t, however, take the Witness with them.

They splinter off, with Cole covering for them. But just as he kills the final guard from among the Pallid Man’s guards, Cole disappears to 2043, right before Aaron’s eyes. Finally, he has proof that Cole is actually a time-traveler. Cassie was right all along!

Cole is recovering in 2043 via a blood transfusion. The good news is they were able to save Cassie, so now the timeline is correct. Cole sees Ramse the first time he wakes up and the two share a light moment together. This bromance is one of the bright spots of the show.

Later, Jones tells Cole the bad news. With all that’s been going on, it’s taking a huge toll on his body. It’s slowly diminishing his life span, which makes Jones feel uncertain if he has enough time to find to finally put a stop to the plague. What will happen first? Cole dying or Cole finding the virus source? And where will they find this virus source now? They have to look into that Operation Troy deeper next.
