Netflix has renewed the highly-controversial teen drama 13 Reasons Why for a second season. Now that Clay Jensen has heard the 13 reasons that pushed his classmate Hannah Baker to take her own life, what will the next episodes be about? Recently, stars Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford discusses where the story of Hannah and Jensen will go next.
Season 2 Renewal
The teen drama based on the best-selling young-adult novel from Jay Asher was met with criticism when it was released on Netflix in March. A lot of experts were concerned about the message it might convey to vulnerable teens. The graphic depiction of rape and teen suicide also worried a lot of parents.
In fact, New Zealand even have to create new ratings and several schools in Canada had to ban students from talking about the show. Netflix also had to add more trigger warnings before the first episode even began streaming.
Despite that, it obviously was a massive hit and, apparently, there are more stories to tell. Last weekend, Netflix renewed the series for Season 2. Pulitzer and Tony winner Brian Yorkey, who wrote the adaptation will sit as the sole showrunner moving forward.
13 Reasons Why Season 2 will have a total of 13 episodes. The next season will drop some time in 2018.
Season 2 Plot
In the first season, Clay received a series of tapes a week after his friend Hannah Baker was found dead inside her parents’ home. The tapes detailed the reasons that led to Hanna’s death.
That of her story is pretty much over: all thirteen tapes have been played and listened to. However, the first season left a slew of questions that, hopefully, will be answered when the second season arrives. But what does actors Minnette and Lanford think 13 Reasons Why Season 2 will be about?
“Personally, I would be interested to see…more discussion into what’s happening afterwards,” Langford told E! News during Netflix’s FYSEE. “It’s interesting in the first season we get to see what the characters go through post-Hannah’s death.”
But while Langford wants the story of Hannah to continue in Season 2, she also wants the series to focus on Jessica [Alisha Boe], Hannah’s former best friend who became the subject of the first tape. She also experienced some awful things since starting in Liberty Highschool.
“I think Jessica has a really interesting story to tell—and recovery to make,” Lanford added.
Minnette, however, just hopes something good will happen in the second season. He added that he wanted to see “some smiles” before explaining that the next installment will have smiles and tears and he is just excited to see what the people behind the show have written for them.
Will Hannah Be in 13 Reasons Why Season 2?
Meanwhile, screenwriter Yorkey promised that Hannah will still be present in 13 Reasons Why Season 2. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he stated that the story of Hannah Baker is not yet finished.
“She’s an integral part of whatever the next chapter of the story is, and she’s very much still at the center of it,” Yorkey explained.
Minnette agrees. The young actor pointed out that the freshman season ended with a lot of cliffhangers that needs to be resolved before the show bows out of television. For one, Tyler (Devin Druid), the school photographer who was exposed as Hannah’s stalker has become even more dangerous. At the close of the season, he was seen purchasing a gun and possessing several explosives. Meanwhile, Alex (Miles Heizer) suffered a bullet wound that some speculate were a suicide attempt. Whether he was killed or he survived would be addressed in Season 2.
The 21-year-old also said that she wants to continue the dialogue that was created on and around the show. Season 1 of 13 Reasons Why is now streaming on Netflix.
