Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter particularly pointed out how effective Philip Seymour Hoffman was in his portrayal of a German spy.

“Philip Seymour Hoffman’s portrait of a smart and seedy old German spy dominates this atmospheric and subdued John le Carre adaptation,” wrote McCarthy in The Hollywood Reporter feature.

Meanwhile, out of four stars, Denver Post’s Lisa Kennedy gave the film a 3.5. She opted to remember the late Hoffman in his last completed movie.

With his sharp instincts and exhausted wisdom, the character of Gunther offers us a bittersweet reminder of Hoffman’s gifts in what is his last completed film,” said Kennedy in her review at Denver Post.
