Victoria's Secret was founded in 1977 by Roy Raymond. A year later, Victoria's Secret was a huge success and Raymond launched a mail-order business with the first-ever Victoria's Secret catalog. Here’s Movie News Guide's (MNG) post about the years of fantasy bras and the Angels who wore them.
Since the inception of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, an Angel has sported a multi-million dollar bra made of diamonds, rubies and other gems. Claudia Schiffer wore the first million dollar bra in 1996. Gisele Bündchen, who wore the most expensive bra to date at $15 million. Despite the fact that the fantasy bra has been showcased since 1996, in 2001, it debuted on Victoria’s Secret runway, with Heidi modeling the $12.5 million dollar “Heavenly Star Bra.” Since then, it has been the highlight of the runway each year. The only exception was in 2004, when in place of the yearly fashion show, the Angels did an Angels Across America Tour due the Superbowl controversy.
The Angels started out as one of Victoria's Secret's lingerie lines. In 1997, the models featured in the original advertising televised campaign including: Helena Christensen, Karen Mulder, Daniela Peštová, Stephanie Seymour and Tyra Banks, with Yasmeen Ghauri being featured in print. In February 1998, the Angels made their runway debut at Victoria's Secret's fourth annual fashion show. Due to the mounting recognition, the brand used the models in several other advertising campaigns, along with Laetitia Casta and Inés Rivero. Christensen was the first to leave the brand. Nowadays, the term Angels refers to the brand's contracted spokeswomen. The other fashion show models are referred to as Runway Angels.
The brand at present lists eight supermodels on its website Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Behati Prinsloo, Candice Swanepoel, Karlie Kloss, Doutzen Kroes, Lily Aldridge and Lindsay Ellingson. Among other acknowledgments, the Victoria's Secret Angels were selected to be part of People magazine's annual "100 Most Beautiful People in the World" issue in 2007. The Victoria's Secret Angels became the first trademark awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Nov. 13, 2007.
Other prominent spokesmodels for the brand have included: Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigová, Oluchi Onweagba, Jessica Stam, Ana Beatriz Barros and Emanuela de Paula, as well as a handful of celebrities such as Taylor Momsen.
