A to Z” Season 1 Episode 13 “M is for Meant to Be” aired on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on NBC. Andrew’s ex-girlfriend is in town for a brief visit and becomes a threat to Zelda’s relationship with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, Zelda is up for a promotion at work, which means moving away from Andrew. Find out what happened in the series finale below.

Andrew (Ben Feldman) calls Zelda (Cristin Milioti) to tell her that Madeline (guest star Dreama Walker), his ex-girlfriend, is staying over his house for a few nights. Is this alright with his girlfriend? Zelda doesn’t think there’s a threat, especially when she learns that Madeline is already engaged. Besides, she has other stuff to deal with other than be petty. Her boss from the law firm has given her the offer of a lifetime as partner. But this would mean relocating to New York, so Zelda has to consider a lot of things. Will she leave Andrew behind for a better opportunity at work?

Madeline arrives, and Zelda learns that she’s no longer engaged, hence the reason for why she’s in town — she needed support from Andrew, whom she considers as one of her oldest friends. While Zelda felt no threats earlier, this time it’s a different matter altogether. Madeline is lovely and sweet, and it looks like she’s back to win Andrew again. But is Zelda being paranoid? Her best friend Stephie (Lenora Crichlow) and even Lora (Hong Chau) and Lydia (Christina Kirk) tell her she has every right to suspect and be jealous. The ex has an agenda, and Zelda better watch out!

So, in the hopes of distracting Madeline, Zelda introduces her to one of her ex-boyfriends, Jay, which actually made Andrew jealous because Jay is perfect — why did Zelda break up with him? Why do they still talk to each other?

Madeline thanks the couple for introducing her to Jay, but she tells them that she’s not ready to start dating again. But why is she stroking Andrew’s arm with a loving touch? And what’s up with her bending for pencils around his office? Zelda tells Andrew what she really thinks of Madeline, and so Andrew had the talk to his ex about this. He explains to her that he’s with Zelda and that he doesn’t see himself with anyone else. Madeline apologizes, but she’s a bit offended that Andrew sees it this way. She has no intentions of stealing someone else’s boyfriend. Why would he think that?

Zelda, on the other hand, has to break it down easy with Jay, since Madeline said she’s not interested in dating. But Jay surprises her with a French kiss, which Andrew found out, causing him to be upset. It isn’t his ex-girlfriend threatening their relationship, it’s Zelda’s ex-boyfriend!

Stu (Henry Zebrowski) rounds up some guys at work to get back at Jay. Along with Andrew, they storm his apartment to tell him to stay away from Zelda. But Jay appears at the door wearing a Marine uniform. Can he be any more perfect? He’s a hunk, and he serves the country. Jay, however, explains that it’s only a costume so that he can get on stage at “The Price Is Right.” Turns out, he’s really a douche. The guys have the most passive confrontation ever.

Meanwhile, Zelda apologizes to Madeline for thinking she was planning on stealing her boyfriend. But, guess what? Madeline actually was planning on doing this! Zelda was only right to suspect!

Madeline even goes on to say that when they first meant, Andrew told her they were meant to be. Zelda realizes Andrew has told her the very same lines when they first to her during their first meeting too. And now, she’s devastated.

She calls up Andrew to ask him, and he admits that he did say the very same words then, when he actually believed it at that time. He believes he’s meant to be with Zelda now. But Andrew also admits that “forever” isn’t a guarantee in a relationship either. Oops, wrong choice of words!

This revelation pushes Zelda to take the partnership in New York and discusses the details with her boss. Zelda is packing up her stuff next, but she tells Stephie that she’s only going to the East Coast for the weekend, to check her new office. She still has four months to settle everything in LA.

She arrives in New York, and everything feels different and strange. She looks out the window of her new office, and it stirs up feelings.

Back home, Andrew is at the bar with Stu, and he’s still heartbroken that Zelda hasn’t called him since leaving for New York. He leaves another voicemail for her, but before he could finish the sentence, Zelda walks into the bar, wearing the same silver dress she wore when Andrew spotted her for the first time.

She tells him that she’s staying for good. It’s lonely back in New York. She looked outside the window and didn’t find Andrew there. They kiss and make-up, and their best friends look on, smiling. Stu remarks that maybe the two will be headed to marriage. They truly are meant to be.
