A to Z” Season 1 Episode 4 “D is for Debbie” aired on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014 at 9:30 p.m. on NBC. Zelda’s Aunt Debbie died, and dealing with such a situation was awkward with her new guy, Andrew, around. Read on for the recap of this episode.

Andrew (Ben Feldman) and Zelda (Cristin Milioti) was supposed to go on a date with their friends. They were going to watch a big game. But plans changed when Zelda called Andrew to say that her Aunt Debbie passed away. She wasn’t really a blood relative. But she had been like a second mother to her as her own mother would often leave her to Debbie’s care.

Because Zelda and Andrew were only dating for three weeks, she believed that having her new boyfriend at the funeral to meet all of her family — meaning the hippie community that her mother belonged to — would be too early. She also didn’t want Andrew to see her most vulnerable side just yet. It was too soon.

Andrew, on the other hand, thought he could be there for Zelda to comfort and support her. He knew what it was like to lose a parent. So, without telling his girlfriend, he went to the funeral to surprise her.

Arriving with flowers on hand, Andrew realized that coming there was a bad idea as Zelda was showing a range of emotions. She also was not yet ready for him to meet her crazy family. But just as Andrew was about to leave, he was spotted by some of Zelda’s aunts and uncles.

Andrew couldn’t leave now. They already asked him to stay for the funeral, and he was, in fact, getting along with Zelda’s extended family. He and Zelda’s Uncle Dave were actually bonding over mushrooms.

But because Uncle Dave was high from ingesting mushrooms, Zelda was forced to say the eulogy for her surrogate mother. Unprepared for what she was going say, Zelda switched into “lawyer mode” as Andrew called it. It was as if she was giving her closing arguments in court when she eulogized Aunt Debbie for 12 minutes. She had to get out of there.

So, Zelda and Andrew went to a nearby café and had ice cream. And there, she cried her heart out. She was loud, and she was screaming that she lost someone. The other diners were looking at them, but you know what? Andrew, as expected, was the supportive boyfriend Zelda could count on. It didn’t matter if he witnessed her breaking down. She let it all out.

Later, when Zelda composed herself, they returned to the funeral where live music was playing, and Zelda joined in to play the piano with Andrew looking at her lovingly.

Andrew: I'm not going anywhere. 'Cause in 2 weeks, I get my wisdom teeth out and I need you because I am not good with pain.

On the flipside to this episode was Big Bird (Christina Kirk) attempting to fire some of her employees at Wallflower, and she had her eye on Stu (Henry Zebrowski) first. If he wanted to stay working for the company, he had to step his game up.

Seeing that YouTube sensation Tyler Ward was in Aunt Debbie’s funeral (thanks to the photo that Andrew sent him!) Stu thought that this would be his way of making points at work. He went to the funeral with the plan of convincing Tyler Ward to create a profile on Wallflower. But because Zelda’s best friend Stephie (Lenora Crichlow) was also hogging Tyler’s attention, having the singer to himself was going to be a challenge. In the end, Tyler dumped both Stu and Stephie, but not without saying that they actually deserve each other.

And that’s what happened on “A to Z” Season 1 Episode 4 “D is for Debbie,” which aired on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at 9:30 p.m. on NBC. Watch the video below for the highlight.
