“A to Z” Season 1 Episode 11 “K is for Keep Out” aired on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on NBC. Having a roommate is fun, but there comes a time when you wish you have the house all to yourself, especially when you want a romantic time with your significant other. This is what happened with Andrew and Zelda in this week’s episode. Read on for the recap.
The episode opens with Andrew (Ben Feldman) and Zelda (Cristin Milioti) in the bathroom, preparing for the morning. Just then, her best friend and roommate Stephie (Lenora Crichlow) walks inside, looking for her earrings. She’s followed by Joseph (guest star Echo Kellum), her new boyfriend, who couldn’t get enough of her. He’s apparently staying over with Stephie for a while, as he’s still looking for his place. The tiny bathroom immediately gets too crowded, which actually shows Andrew and Zelda’s problem with their roommates lately.
The couple is having trouble finding some alone time. With Joseph and Stephie constantly hanging out at Zelda’s place and a dependent and needy Stu (Henry Zebrowski) is at Andrew’s place, private romantic times don’t come easy.
When he gets a ticket from Joseph for the Clippers game, Andrew thinks he should give this to Stu instead, so that while they’re at the basketball, he and Zelda could have a romantic dinner at his place. But on the night of their date, Stephie arrives, and she’s whining about whose idea it was to get her boyfriend and her ex-boyfriend together because apparently, Joseph and Stu hit it off really well. She’s already thinking about how disastrous it would be if Stu ends up becoming Joseph’s best man at their wedding. As Andrew and Zelda try to appease Stephie, Stu walks in, who’s back from the game. Their planned romantic dinner fizzles out just like that.
Meanwhile, at Wallflower, Dane (guest star Wayne Wilderson) from corporate pops in to assess Lydia’s work. There’s a recent outage of the site, and corporate isn’t happy about it. But Lydia has other things in mind. She’s wondering if Dane likes her enough to want to date her, and she asks Lora (Hong Chau) for help. Can she be a dear girlfriend and feel Dane out?
Back to Andrew and Zelda’s problem, she suggests that Andrew asks Stu to have a night off and leave the apartment so the couple could spend their time together. But Stu gets offended by this, and their argument only makes Zelda’s boyfriend realize that the only solution would be to get his own place.
While hunting apartments, Andrew shows the place he’s planning to rent and surprises Zelda with this. She assumes that he’s asking her to live with him, so she hesitantly agrees. Andrew didn’t have the heart to tell her she assumed wrong. Later, they separately tell their best friends that they’re not yet ready for this kind of arrangement, but Stephie excitedly tells Zelda that after briefly dating Joseph, they’re moving in together. Realizing that they’ve dated longer than them, Zelda thinks it’s time to take a leap of faith with Andrew. What the heck, right?
Lydia and Lora are at the salon, engaging in a very conventional girl talk. It’s so out of character for the both of them, but they’re having real fun with it. Lydia asks Lora to give Dane some hints about dating someone at work. Dane, however, assumes Lora is talking about herself, so he asks her to file a relationship disclosure form at work and invites her out. Eeeep! But guess what? It’s actually all just a ploy to make Lydia jealous. Dane really wants to date Lydia. They settle this by heading out to have dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. Love is in the air!
It’s time to sign the lease at Andrew and Zelda’s new apartment, and they’re both delaying the process. Stephie arrives, with Joseph in tow, in the hopes of delaying the process too. Stu also arrives, and with less restraint, he blurts out about Andrew’s hesitation for moving in with Zelda. But instead of getting mad, Zelda is relieved. Their decision to hold off on the signing is sealed, especially when the guy managing the place tells them there is a registered sex offender in the neighborhood, and it’s actually him. There will be no moving in the new apartment for now!
That night, Andrew and Zelda get the surprise of their life when, arriving at Andrew’s place, they see that their best friends prepared a glorious and romantic dinner just for the two of them. More than that, Stu agrees he’ll be away for three days. It’s the least they can do for the couple. Their gesture is much appreciated!
