ABC’s “Rising Star” is hosted by award-winning singer and songwriter Josh Groban with “Fast & Furious” blockbuster franchise star Ludacris, “Timber” singer Ke$ha, and country crooner Brad Paisley. It will premiere on Sunday, June 22, 2014 on ABC. What makes it stand out among other singing competitions out there? Read on to find more about ABC’s “Rising Star” including the host, talented panel of judges and get the first look at the upcoming singing competition.
According to the official show’s synopsis posted on ABC, “Rising Star” shines among the likes of the traditional competition such as NBC’s “The Voice” and FOX’s “American Idol.” Why? Because it gives the audience the power to decide whether who will stay or not with the use of an app-in real time!
Variety reported that the ABC series was based on the hit interactive talent show “HaKokhav HaBa” in Israel, which has been adapted internationally since it first aired in 2013. Alongside Brazil, Portugal and Turkey, the United States is the fourth country that acquired the rights from Keshet International.
Keshet International’s managing director, Alon Shtruzman pointed out that it will give a chance for the networks to step out of their comfort zones. He is also confident with the show’s unscripted format and the integration of technology in the mix.
“It was the most unpredicted success in the last few years. If we sit and analyze what we should do next, most likely it would be ‘Don’t do any more talent shows.’ But with ‘Rising Star,’ you can change the paradigm.” Shtruzman shared in the Variety article.
With the high-profile project, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) posted that it’s not surprising that the network has tapped music “experts” with TV experience to oversee the entire competition.
Groban had a frequent gig as a guest co-host on “Live!” and showcased his acting chops in several movies including the romance comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love” alongside Steve Carell, Julianne Mloore, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.
Country music crooner Paisley has been successfully hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards (CMA) Awards with Carrie Underwood for six straight years while Ludacris had recently hosted the 2014 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs).
On the other hand, Ke$ha had a TV starring gig with the MTV docu-series “Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life,” which started airing in April 2013.
Moreover, THR also reported that the executive producers Ken Warwick (“American Idol”) and Nicolle Yaron (“The Voice”) have solved most of the time zones problems in the U.S. “Rising Star” is slated to be aired live with a tweaked schedule: Eastern (9-11 p.m.), Central (8-10 p.m.) and Mountain (7-9 p.m.).
The aforementioned schedule was made after they had consulted with several mathematicians and statisticians.
“The chances of there being a big difference are apparently very small. We have this in place just in case, but we don’t know that we’ll ever have to use it,” Yaron said in the THR interview.
