“Selfie” is an upcoming series starring Karen Gillan (MARVEL’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Doctor Who”), John Cho (“American Pie”, “Star Trek”), Tim Peper (“The Greatest Game Ever Played “), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“Ghost the Musical”), Allyn Rachel (“A Million Ways to Die in the West”) and David Harewood (“Homeland”). It airs on Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. on ABC as part of the network’s fall schedule for 2014-2015 television.
The newest situational comedy series is developed by “Suburgatory” creator Emily Kapnek. It is executively produced by Kapnek with “The Last Song” director Julie Anne Robinson, with the help of Piece of Pie Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
ABC takes a modern spin on the famed Broadway musical “My Fair Lady” starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison from the play “Pygmalion.” The said musical was already adapted on film with Harrison and Audrey Hepburn in 1964. The story is about a native English girl who has sought the help of a language phonetics to help her have a refined speaking voice.
According to Oxford Dictionary, the series got its name from the word “selfie,” which means as a self-captured photograph, “typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” It was also hailed by Oxford as the “Word of the Year” for 2013.
ABC posted on the show’s official web page that “Selfie” features a modern-day Eliza Dooley (Karen Gillan). Eliza is a former nerd who is now obsessed to become famous by being active in various social media sites. Little did she know, having thousands of followers online doesn’t matter if you’ve got no “friends” in real life.
She will then hire a marketing guru named Henry Higgins (John Cho) to help her “rebrand” her image. It is during a humiliating breakup when she becomes a subject of a viral video. He agrees to it and assures her that there’s more important things in life rather than being “Instafamous.”
They will be joined by other “Selfie” characters including Ethan Chase (Tim Peper), Charmonique (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), Bryn (Allyn Rachel) and Sam Saperstein (Davide Harewood).
In an interview with Telegraph, Gillian talked about her role in the network’s newest sitcom. She said that her role is similar to the famous Kardashians. She also shared that she had the same experience with Eliza’s “rebranding” stint in the show. With acting, she had grown out from her shy and withdrawn persona.
“I was an only child, so I didn’t really learn how to interact with other people. I had a couple of friends in school, but that’s it,” said Gillan in the Telegraph interview.
And that’s it for the preview of ABC’s “Selfie.” It will premiere alongside another ABC comedy series, “Manhattan Love Story,” starring Analeigh Tipton and Jake Dormann. It airs on Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. on ABC. Check out Movie News Guide (MNG) regularly for more news about your favorite TV series, upcoming movies and Hollywood celebrities.
