The Aldub tandem broke Twitter’s record last Sept. 19 by garnering a whopping 12M tweets in a span of 24 hours. The hashtag #ALDUBMostAwaitedDate was their fans’ way of showing their excitement for their first date. Aldub is the split-screen loveteam composed of Alden Richards and Maine ‘Yaya Dub’ Mendoza.
They portray roles in a mini-series called “Kalyeserye” from the longest-running variety TV show in the Philippines, “Eat Bulaga,” which airs from Monday to Saturday. Alden is the cutie heartthrob who shows his gentleman gestures of love towards the unassuming and pretty girl “Yaya Dub.” He is in the studio and she is in the designated outdoor location for their segment “Juan For All, All For Juan.”
They are exchanging messages through fansigns, dubsmashes of love songs, whispers and kisses in front of the screen. Since then, their followers are looking forward to the day when they finally meet.
The program’s accidentally-formed loveteam became a massive hit for viewers. In fact, according to GMA Network, the final count was 12, 125, 300 tweets last Sunday midnight. Rappler reported the timeline of the past week’s event that led to the exciting ‘Saturdate.’ Yaya Dub’s old-aged employer, Lola Nidora eventually gave the blessing for the young lovers for their date last Sept. 16.
Even on weekdays, the Aldub duo trends worldwide with an average of 1-2 million tweets per episode. Their love team is a breath of fresh air for the Philippine TV since it brought back the traditional ways of courting. The show teaches valuable lessons too that even priests used them as a reference, cited by CBCPNews.
‘Sa tamang panahon’ translated to ‘in the right time’ is Lola Nidora’s constant reminder for Alden and Yaya Dub to patiently wait until they can finally be with each other. This is a good lesson for today’s youth especially those who are too aggressive when dealing with the matters of the heart.
Also, since it is a variety show, there are moments wherein Maine and Alden are caught off-guard with their actions which make viewers wonder if they are truly starting to like one another. Furthermore, they are dropping subtweets and indirect IG posts for each other without mentioning or tagging anyone, much to the delight of their fans.
Aldub just started last July 16 and it continues to dominate both social media and mainstream TV. For sure, followers of Alden Richards and Maine ‘Yaya Dub’ Mendoza will keep updated on what will happen next in the show. Can fans surpass the 20, 50, 75 or even 100 million tweets? Will they be just a love team or will they be a couple for real?
