The two love birds of Eat Bulaga’s “Kalyeserye,” Alden Richards and Yaya Dub known as Maine Mendoza in real life has been gaining both local and international attention. With international news platforms, that’s constantly giving updates globally over social media.
Aldub has grown popularity enough to be an appropriate point of topic in the academe word most particularly in media and popular culture. According to GMA News Network, Ateneo Initiative for Korean Studies or AIKS has initiated a special lecture on the significance of Hallyu episode that one way or another may have started AlDub phenomena.
According to Alona Guevarra, Ateneo de Manila University English professor, the popular and effective factors, both local and foreign which was greatly obtained from the Philippines familiarity, aided by another phenomenon from Hallyu or the Korean Culture Wave, have become a huge factor that has fueled the popularity of AlDub, Inquirer.net reported.
It was during the early part of the 2000s when KPop or Korean music Pop and Korean soap drama came in the Philippine Television which have consequently introduced the country to Hallyu. Just like Korean drama, Aldub has also developed connections to the viewers which resulted to a vast and loyal cult following in just a span of 4 months.
The Korean Drama series were instantly appreciated and accepted by the audience. Like “Endless Love” and “Full House,” where the casts have become a household name and had been an important fixture in Philippines TV for quite a while.
Hallyu has qualities that’s familiar to the Filipinos; that has graced humor and also promoting good values similar the Filipino cultures and beliefs. Not to mention the thrill or kilig factor is no doubt, one of Filipino’s favorite theme.
As with AlDub, most of these qualities have captured the heart of the viewers, giving the fans a sort of rest from the burdens of daily life.
