bluesy guitar guy from Georgia has won this season’s American Idol. Phillip Phillips won the first place prize Wednesday by defeating Jessica Sanchez following a record turnout of viewer voting. He became the fifth consecutive male to take home the award.
The twenty-one year old pawnshop employee from the city of Leesburg, Georgia looked somewhat stunned when the host of Idol, Ryan Seacrest called out his name as the winner. He then accepted a congratulatory hug from the runner-up and congratulations from all the other finalists.
Throughout the season, Phillips kept his self-effacing, humble demeanor and said upon winning the title that he was not sure why he had won. He said he thinks some of the people out there liked his music and that he was also lucky.
A record 132 million votes came through from viewers after the final showdown on Tuesday. Sanchez, the 16-year old from Chula Vista, California just missed out as Phillips took the majority of votes. The show does not announce the final vote count.
The last female winner and last non-white winner of the show was Jordin Sparks who won in 2007. Lee DeWyze, Kris Allen and finally David Cook preceded Scotty McCreery, the winner of last year’s show.
Sanchez is Hispanic and Filipino and said she did not blame coming in second on anyone. She said Phillips had his supporters and I had mine. The genres we sing are completely different and we are very different people.
She said she is more urban R&B, while he was alternative, indie rock. She said she had expected to finish second.
