American Idol Season 14 premiered on Jan. 7, 2014. The show started with Ryan Seacrest announcing, key changes such as introducing the Top 24 before the audience even gets to watch the auditions. Read on for more details.

The show’s premiere episode kicks off with the introduction of the show and its judges. Jennifer Lopez will be in charge of the auditions in New York, New Orleans for Harry Connick Jr. and Nashville for Keith Urban.

The auditions start at Keith’s hometown, Nashville. Thousands of “American Idol” hopefuls have submitted their auditions online hoping to get that golden ticket to Hollywood (much like the golden ticket in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”).

The auditions start with a 17-year-old hopeful, Riley Bria, who told Keith that he had a chance to sing with him in 2012. Riley sang Keith’s song “Georgia Woods.” Keith was all smiles while Riley was performing. J. Lo told him that he’s made for the guitar. He got three yes votes from the judges.

Priscilla Barker’s mom is a huge fan of Keith. Her accent caused quite a bit of confusion when Priscilla said “daddy,” but the judges thought she was saying something about “P. Diddy.” Priscilla asks Keith if she could have her mom meet him and assured him that they trained her to be “safe.” Priscilla gets a golden ticket, and her mom gets to hug Keith.

Cameron Bedell, 25, from Kansas sang “You are the Best Thing.” J. Lo said they’re having a great morning, and Keith said that he wants to jam with Cameron. Cameron takes a golden ticket with him.

We’re definitely noticing some of the changes they’ve made in “American Idol.” It’s a much more hilarious version of the old show. One in particular was when the contestants were talking about the judges, and one hopeful said she’s looking forward to Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, which was so last season! Judges also get playful in-between auditions, such as when Keith sat in Harry’s lap and gets surprised by a “stick” as he sits.

Young hopefuls have also noticeably increased such as 15-year-old Amber Walker whose performance of “Elvis” shocks Jennifer. Of course, not everyone gets to go home with the golden ticket to Hollywood. Harry asked Kylie Corman, 24, if he could touch his hair. Harry asked for an antibacterial gel afterwards. Kylie also sang while Jennifer was saying something about his performance. Keith told him he should stop if he’s not ready to accept criticisms.

Kory Wheeler, 26, works at the coffee shop across the street, which made the judges think “Oh it’s not gonna be good.” But he surprises them with his performance of “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Seacrest accompanies Wheeler to his boss and wittily asks his boss if Wheeler can take the day off.

Michael Simeon might be one of the luckiest hopefuls out there, as he gets a chance to dance with Jennifer Lopez, as Keith plays the guitar and Harry plays the piano for them while Michael sang “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith.

The premiere ended with Emily Brooke who has done a spectacular rendition of Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away.” Jennifer admitted that she gets nervous when it comes to a Carrie Underwood song. Harry says that Brooke has the most potential in Nashville.
