The Americans Recap: Born Again

The Americans” Season 3 Episode 6 “Born Again” aired on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 10 p.m. on FX. Paige finally gets baptized, while Philip grows more and more awkward with his mission with Kimmy. Find out what happened in the recap below.

Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) are attending Paige’s (Holly Taylor) baptism. The pastor speaks about how proud he is for the young girl, especially when she actively participates during political and religious protests with the congregation. He dunks her in the water to signify that she has been baptized and the church members cheered. Paige proudly smiles and looks at her parents who are seated among the audience.

Elizabeth is with the new recruit, Hans (Peter Mark Kendall), who tells her that there’s this kid in his class whom he suspects may be CIA. She will have to dig into this deeper, but for now, he has to lay low and stop shadowing the guy until she gets confirmation from the Center.

At home, Philip tells his daughter that he’s very proud of how she sticks with her beliefs, despite her parents not being religious. It’s always good to be her own person and to be true to herself. Paige assures her father that she believes in this as well, which is why she insisted on getting baptized.

The Jennings’ welcome Stan (Noah Emmerich) and his date Tori (Calli Thorne) for dinner at their house. Their youngest Henry (Keidrich Sellati) is being nosy and asks the couple all sorts of questions. They explain that they met during the summit, a place where grown-ups meet and help other grown-ups with their problems. Back at his own house, Stan and Tori get intimate, but he has his ex-wife Sandra (Susan Misner) on his mind.

In Russia, Nina (Annet Mahendru) succeeds in extracting information from Evie. She tricks her into talking about her boyfriend by narrating the story of her two lovers. Later, Evie is taken away from the cell – confused, scared and bewildered, at what Nina has done to her. Afterwards, Nina is rewarded with a sumptuous stake dinner and wine by Oleg’s (Costa Ronin) father. But they are not done with her yet.

Philip is smoking weed with Kimberly (Julie Garner) in her room. He introduces her to the music of Pink Floyd and she likes it very much. She then asks Philip (as James while undercover) if they can take a bath together, but he declines and tells her she can go ahead. As she’s taking a shower, Philip lets someone in to plant a recording device in Kimmy’s dad’s office.

Kimmy steps out of the bathroom and Philip distracts her as the other agent is still not done. She tries to entice Philip to have sex with her, but since he’s having a problem with the age factor (as Kimmy is almost as young as Paige), he makes up some story about serving Jesus. Kimmy thinks he loathes her, but he assures her she’s perfect.

Back the Jennings, Paige walks in on her mother smoking cigarettes. She tells Elizabeth she knows and Henry knows, but she’s also aware that her mom knows how bad smoking is, so she trusts that she will quit soon. Elizabeth is in awe of her daughter’s maturity. Paige asks her what she really thinks of her church and she admits it’s not really something she believes in. Paige advises her mother to pray as she thinks that it will provide her much more relief than smoking.

Later that night, Philip and Elizabeth exchange stories about what happened to their day. They’re secretly smoking pot in their bedroom. Elizabeth shares her encounter with Paige; about how she advised her to pray and they both laugh. Philip says that Jesus really did save him on his mission with Kimmy earlier. They both laugh again. Seriously, however, Philip tells Elizabeth that eventually he may have to sleep with her if this mission goes on.

Stan learns that an old colleague had died during a plane crash and since his ex-wife is also friends with this guy, Sandra wonders if they will be going to the wake together. This means, the ex-couple may soon embark on a road trip. Will this rekindle their marriage?

Philip meets Gabriel (Frank Langella) to provide updates on his mission. He now wants Philip to visit Kimmy every week as the recording device will have to be updated often. Philip argues and Gabriel knows why he’s against this. He reminds him, however, that getting intimate with Kimmy will help with their mission’s progress. It’s going to happen whether Philip likes it or not.

Gabriel shares more bad news. His old lover, Irena, whom he met before marrying Elizabeth, has been captured in Brazil. She leaves a 20-year old son who is now a paratrooper. The boy is Philip’s.

Elizabeth also has a separate meeting with Gabriel and she shows him photos that Hans took of the kids he think may be CIA. Gabriel says this could be the South African anti-apartheid movement and say that they have been recruiting college kids and there are reports the group may soon be planning a hit. Elizabeth and Gabriel also discuss Philip. He believes that her husband is losing confidence in him.

Philip is with Kimmy again and as she tries to entice her to get in bed together, he shares how he’s hesitating because he got someone pregnant at 17 (which was partly true with Irena). He reasons he’s still quite messed up, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want Kimmy. She suggests that they kneel together and pray instead.

Elizabeth surprises her daughter after school. She brings Paige to a different part of town and tells her that this was the site where she and Paige’s father used to join protests years back when they were activists. She tells Paige that they still are; that they are fighting in other ways, sometimes by adopting illegal ways. She’s slowly easing her daughter in about the truth and she tells Paige that she’s so much like her in many ways. She has no idea.
