For the third season of “The Americans,” the show is tapping into a huge talent by enlisting Tony Award-winning actor and Oscar nominee Frank Langella. Read on to learn more about this show update.
Multi-awarded actor Frank Langella is joining the third season of “The Americans” as the newest handler of KGB undercover agents Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell). Langella will take on the role of Gabriel, whose character is described as a retiree. Gabriel returns to the agency to oversee its married undercover agents and will take over the task from Claudia (Margo Martindale) who’s had some run-ins with the Jennings, as they believed she was behind some of the incidents that placed their life in danger.
"We've been huge fans of Frank's work for a long time, and it's been such a pleasure getting to know Frank himself in the beginning stages of working together on the character of Gabriel,” said the executive producers of “The Americans,” Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, in a press release published on Entertainment Weekly.
Meanwhile, Martindale may still return to the series, according to the show’s producers. But at the moment, the character of Claudia, whom the producers described as unpredictable and secretive, has not been written into the script for the third season. In the second season, Claudia also revealed to the couple that the Center intends to turn their eldest daughter, Paige.
“The Americans,” which first premiered in 2013, takes place in the 1980s and depicted the conflict between the KGB and the CIA. The show centers on a married couple who has lived in America for most of their lives, but who turned out to be undercover agents for the KGB.
Production for “The Americans” Season 3 has reportedly stared this October. The series is expected to return to FX by January of 2015.
And that’s the latest update on “The Americans,” which has added Tony winner Frank Langella into the cast. Catch the show’s return on FX early next year, but in the meantime, check for updates about this series here on Movie News Guide (MNG).
