“The Americans” Season 2 Finale Episode 13 “Echo” aired on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 10 p.m. on FX. Husband-and-wife KGB spy duo Phillip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings learned the extent of their loyalty the hard way. Read on to find more about “The Americans” recap of Season 2 Finale Episode 13 “Echo” and spoilers for the upcoming season 3.

“The Americans” Season 2 Finale Episode 13 “Echo” began with the quest of both sides from acquiring the stealth technology program called “Echo,” which was in the hands of FBI Agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich). After obtaining a secret copy, he had chosen to take hold of “Echo” and let Nina Sergeevna (Annet Mahendru), his secret Russian lover, be executed.

Phillip and Elizabeth had sought the help of a Soviet sympathizer to get their own copy. Unfortunately, Fred Timbrook (John Carroll Lynch) got shot in the process after getting it. They also learned that former navy seal officer Andrew Larrick (Lee Tergesen) wanted to take revenge on Jared (Owen Connors).

Jared saved them from getting attacked by Larrick, but he had an alarming bullet wound in his neck. He, then, admitted that he had killed his parents and sister upon learning about their true identities. In the end, the couple had learned that the organization has finally set its eye on their precious daughter, Paige (Holly Taylor) to replace Jared’s place.

“The Americans” executive producers Joel Fields & Joe Weisberg, who also penned the finale episode with the directions of Daniel Sackheim, shared with TV Line  several spoilers on what the audience can expect in the upcoming season 3.

Jennings’ family in shambles. Since the beginning, Phillip hadn’t been satisfied on his choices in life including being part of a spy organization. The couple had thought of giving a different life for their two children. On the other hand, Elizabeth had accepted that fact that Paige is finding her true purpose.

Paige’s true calling. The couple’s temporary supervisor, Claudia (Margo Martindale), informed them that Paige should be trained as a second generation spy. Field had described Holly’s character “to be her own person” and there’s a chance she will try to be a hardheaded teenager over the family’s final decision.
Philip’s desperate attempt. Upon learning about the news, he had purposely went to meet Arkady. He had risked their status as the organization’s prized assets, just to hear let the KGB head to hear about his side on the matter.

Jenning’s new handler. Field had been in the talks on finding a new handler for the couple. Kate (Wrenn Schmidt) was killed by Larrick in “The Americans” Season 2 Episode 11 “Stealth” (air date: May 7, 2014). Claudia stands as their temporary handler.

Jared’s surprising story line. Fields and Weisberg had agreed that the couple’s lies may affect their family life. Now the couple was on the process on finding out how they can handle the issue without making Jared’s mistake again.
