Black-ish” takes a break this week to give way to the American Music Awards (AMA) on ABC. The show is currently enjoying a good first season run, having been picked up for full episodes by the network last October. To make things more interesting, the series has booked some special guest stars. Read on for the details.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), “Black-ish” will have the star of “Devious Maids” Ana Ortiz in a guest-starring role in an episode that will be expected to air sometime in December. Ortiz will take the role of one of Dre’s co-workers named Angelica Rodriguez, who will be at odds with Dre (Anthony Anderson) during the annual office Christmas Party.

Ortiz has been making the TV guesting rounds in a lot of ABC’s shows of late. The actress was also seen in an episode of “Revenge” and most recently on "How to Get Away With Murder.” Ortiz was previously in an ABC show too, on the show “Ugly Betty” with America Ferrera. The series aired on the Disney-owned channel between 2006 to 2010.

Meanwhile, “Black-ish” has also enlisted Jenifer Lewis to play Dre’s mother. As reported on TV Line, this will be a recurring role. The character, named Ruby, has been described as a kind of overbearing.

“She smothers pork chops with gravy, Dre with love, and would like to flat out smother [Dre’s wife] Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), who feels the same way about her,” according to the TV Line report.

When “Black-ish” debuted last September, the show gained strong viewership with a 3.3 demo rating and 11 million viewers. Following “Modern Family” on the 9:30 p.m. timeslot, the series managed to retain the longtime series’ audience between 85 to 96 percent week after week. Reviews for the series have also been generally positive, proving that “Black-ish” is truly being embraced by a varied audience.

“Black-ish” was one of the first series ABC has decided to give additional episodes order to. The show is expected to complete its 24-episode order for the 2014-2015 season.

Catch “Black-ish” every Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. on ABC. The show is on a hiatus this week, but it will be returning with a new episode on Nov. 12, 2014.
