Andy Serkis revealed in an interview that he will have a hand in the production of two upcoming films: “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Star Wars Episode VII.” Serkis will he serve as a performance capture consultant, but he will also play a role in both films. As of yet, Serkis remains silent on what his roles might be. Read on to learn more about this scoop.
“I’m not at liberty to mention. But it’s all the same to me. I’ve never drawn a distinction when playing a role, whether it be live action or performance capture. Acting is acting. It’s just basically what you wear to the set that’s different,” responded Serkis in a Q&A with Variety when asked whether his face would be shown.
This news came out after Mark Ruffalo, who will appear as the Hulk in the “Avengers” sequel, revealed in May 2014 that he was asking Andy Serkis for assistance regarding his role.
“Performance capture was used on the previous ‘Hulk,’ but not to the same extent Mark is using it now. There are tools and ways of working with an actor that makes them feel that they own the character. And a character the size of the Hulk needs ownership, which Mark has now,” said Serkis in the Variety interview.
Regarding his role in “Star Wars,” Serkis referred to it as “extraordinary.” He shared that he grew up watching the “Star Wars” films.
Serkis is best known for his performance as Gollum/Smeagol in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogy. In addition, he serves as a second unit director in “The Hobbit” films, as well as Caesar in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and its upcoming sequel “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Along with Jonathan Cavendish, Serkis has founded the Imaginarium Studios.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” is scheduled for theatrical release on May 1, 2015. The film is the eleventh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will feature an ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson among others. Meanwhile, “Star Wars Episode VII” will be released on December 18, 2015. It will be a sequel to “The Return of the Jedi.” The movie is set after 30 years, following the events of the last film, and it will feature new characters as well as old ones.
