The God of Thunder is going to face some of the most powerful villains in Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor: Ragnarok. Aside from Hela (Cate Blanchett) and the Gamemaster (Jeff Goldblum), the hero of Asgard has to defeat one fiery comic book monster in the upcoming movie. Find out below.
Asgard Will Burn
Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth) has faced some powerful villains to protect Asgard and Earth, but none more challenging than the bad guys that will stand in the way of peace in Thor: Ragnarok. Aside from Hela, who will bring about the destruction of Asgard, and the Gamemaster, who will capture Thor and make him battle the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), there is also Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who would not fail to stir trouble for his brother.
However, new reports claim that another villain will appear in the movie. Photos of the movie’s Funko Pop! has revealed that classic comic book villain, Surtur, will also make an appearance.
Surtur is a fire giant based on the Norse mythological character, Surtr. Since his appearance in the comic book universe in 1963, he has become one of the most popular/recurring villains of Thor. Therefore, it is no surprise that he has finally appeared on the big screen to battle the God of Thunder.
According to Marvel lore, Surtur was a native to the extra-dimensional plane known as Muspelheim. He and the ice demon Ymir are supposed to be older than Asgardian ruler Odin (played on-screen by Anthony Hopkins). Surtur was imprisoned within the depths of Earth but was once set free by Loki in order to break the romance between Thor and Jane Foster.
Moreover, he is an important part of Ragnarok, the event that signals the end of the gods (and their rebirth). He will destroy Asgard with the Twilight Sword, a weapon created using the “Burning Galaxy” (made from the explosion of the home galaxy of the Korbonites).
Aside from his massive size, Surtur is not someone to take lightly. He has super strength and he can manipulate fire and molecules at will. His appearance in Thor: Ragnarok will definitely make saving Asgard become almost an impossible feat and a grand way to end a trilogy.
End of the Road
Meanwhile, in a separate interview, Marvel boss Kevin Feige talked to Toronto Sun about how Thor: Ragnarok will change the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aside from the fact that will conclude Thor’s trilogy, he also revealed that the movie will directly tie into next year’s Avengers: Infinity War.
“I think that we are finding ourselves as we complete Phase 3 and finish this 22-movie narrative that it’s working out that way,” he explained. “We did three Iron Man films, three Captain America films, three Thor films. Things change drastically in Ragnarok and then build directly into Infinity War.”
Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok is expected to reveal the location of the sixth and last Infinity Stones which Thanos (Josh Brolin) needs to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet. Some suspect that the Soul Stone, which grants the user to control souls, is hidden inside Thor’s Mjolnir. It would take Hela destroying the mystical weapon to find it. Others think that Idris Elba’s Heimdall possesses the stone which gives him the power to see nine realms and ten trillion souls. Hela could also use the Soul Stone to destroy Asgard.
Thor: Ragnarok will also star Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange who will help the God of Thunder find his father, Odin, on Earth. The movie will also feature Jaimie Alexander, Karl Urban and Tessa Thompson. The third Thor movie will land on the big screen on Nov. 3.
