HBO continued to vamp up one of the channel’s biggest collaborations yet with the addition of a respected award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins and critically acclaimed actress Evan Rachel Wood. They will star in a remake of 1973 film “Westworld” from sci-fi honco J.J. Abrams. Want to know more? Read on to find out more about HBO’s “Westworld.”
According to Entertainment Weekly (EW), “The Silence of the Lambs” star and Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins and former child actress Evan Rachel Wood will star in the upcoming remake of “Westworld.” The pilot episode is directed by Jonathan Nolan and co-written by his wife, Lisa Joy.
The upcoming TV adaptation will be headed by J.J. Abrams with “Person of Interest” creator Jonathan Nolan, alongside Jerry Weintraub and Bryan Burk through Abrams’ Bad Robot Production company. It is based on the sci-fi film of the same name, written and directed by Michael Crichton (“Jurassic Park”, “ER”). This will be the second TV adaptation for Crichton’s movie after its first one in 1980.
“Westworld” is loosely based on the film about a high-tech amusement park in the near future. It is divided into different parts that showcased three separate time in history. These include the “West World,” “Medieval World” and “Roman World.” One thing that made the theme park unique was due to the use of humanlike androids as entertainers. Unfortunately, the “vacation” for the humans got flawed when all the androids were infected with the virus. The malfunctioning robots became cold-blooded killers, a threat to the humans at the park.
Film Divider reported that Hopkins will take on the role of Dr. Robert Ford, the head of the Westworld. He has a complicated persona, who was willing to do everything to achieve his vision for the park. On the other hand, Wood will play Dolores Abernathy, one of the androids in the park. Aside from Hopkins and Wood, James Marsden was also offerred a role as a lead robot, but there has been no updates if he would officially join as a cast member.
Hopkins was most commonly known for his role as Hannibal Lecter in three film adaptations of the series: “The Silence of the Lambs” with Jodie Foster (1991), “Hannibal” with Julianne Moore (2001) and “Red Dragon” in 2002. His other notable film and TV works include “Meet Joe Black,” “Thor” film franchise, “Noah,” and TV films such as “War and Peace” and “Great Expectations.”
Wood, who started as a child actress in the 1990s, first started in several made-for-TV films before she had her breakthrough film roles in “Little Secrets,” “S1m0ne” and the critically acclaimed “Thirteen” starring Wood and Nikki Reed. She also starred in films “Running With Scissors,” “King of California,” “Across the Universe” and “The Wrestler.” Her most recent film and TV roles were Molly Stearns in “The Ides of March” with Ryan Gosling, Sophie-Anne Leclerq in HBO’s “True Blood” and Veda Pierce in HBO’s mini-series, “Mildred Pierce.”
Furthermore, HBO’s “Westworld” remake will be the first major cable project for “Bad Robot,” which produced the hit series “Alias” and “Lost.” Nolan, who was known for his works on the “Batman” franchise, will have his second dip in the TV industry after the success of the hit CBS show “Person of Interest” with Abrams.
That’s it for the update and preview on HBO’s “Westworld” pilot remake from J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan, starring Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Woods.
