Aquaman goes into production this year. Jason Momoa will be reprising his role from Justice League in the solo movie. With this movie, it will be interesting to see how his story takes shape in the DC universe. With a director, cast and release date confirmed for the movie, here is everything to know about it.

The cast of Aquaman is very impressive. Joining Jason’s Aquaman are Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko and Yahya-Abdul Mateen II as Black Manta.

Kidman was recently confirmed as Jason’s on-screen mother Queen Atlanna while others have been confirmed for a while now. As far as Aquaman’s human father is concerned, Morrison initially played Abin Sur in Green Lantern, which does not make him new to the DC universe.

It would be also intriguing to know that when James Wan cast Patrick Wilson as the Ocean Master, it was considered as the best casting yet in DCEU. Considering that the two have worked together in the Conjuring franchise, Wilson was the obvious choice.

While in Justice League, Batman sets out to assemble other metahumans, like Diana, who can help him protect Earth from an inevitable invasion, it perhaps will not really talk about each of these metahumans’ origins.

Their supporting characters will be showing up and a few glimpses from their respective universes will be seen, however, it would be left on the solo movies to talk about the heroes’ origin.

Much like Wonder Woman this year, Aquaman will also highlight Arthur Curry’s early life and how he became the King of Seven Seas. With him being half-human, half-Atlantean, it will be worth watching how he balances out his role both on land and underwater.

Den of Geek reported that while there is no official synopsis yet, there is a little extract, which comes close to it.

According to this extract, Aquaman is the reluctant ruler of the Seven Seas who is caught between the surface that continues to damage the seas and the Atlantean looking to revolt against surface dwellers. Between all of this lies his commitment to protecting the globe.

Considering the fact that Queen Atlanna rightly believes Arthur is the key to solving the crisis between land and sea, it would be seen how well can Arthur step up in this role.

James Wan was announced director of the movie quite a while back. He, along with Geoff Johns, wrote a treatment for the movie. He has been very optimistic about the movie and has clarified that he has a vision for the movie.

According to him, the movie will be a swashbuckling action adventure with a lot of spirit. He also stated that it will be more like a quest story along the lines of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone.

While Aquaman has fought many other villains, Ocean Master and Black Manta are two most recognizable villains ever. Wilson is playing Ocean Master and Mateen II is playing the latter.

According to what is known, Wilson’s character will have some huge issues with his half-brother Arthur and these issues will mainly be because of the throne of Atlantis.

Orm will consider himself more worthy than Arthur, which will lead to conflict. This conflict does make it sound quite familiar to the one that Thor and Loki had in MCU, but since this also has Wan’s brilliance written all over it, it will surely pan out in some other way.

Even in the animated movie Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, the conflict was shown at a much grander scale. Ocean Master’s army ended up invading land.

Release date

With Jason Momoa already landing in Australia a few days back, the movie will be shooting there this year to prepare for its next year’s release.

Aquaman will release next year on Dec. 21.
