Double trouble: Could Charlize Theron’s Lorraine Broughton one day cross paths with Keanu Reeves’ John Wick? Ahead of the release of Atomic Blonde in theaters worldwide, director David Leitch talked about the possibility of the two kick-ass action heroes to team up on the big screen.
New Action Heroes
Reeves’ John Wick has reinvigorated the industry’s demand for action movies. After two installments, the franchise has collectively grossed over $250 million at the global box office. It also has created a following and, sometime next year, the studio will make the world of assassins even bigger with a television series.
Leitch wants to do the same for Atomic Blonde. The upcoming female-led movie follows an M16 spy who was sent to Berlin to investigate the murder of another agent. From the trailer, Theron’s Lorraine Broughton does have quite a few similarities with Reeves’ John Wick, and it would be interesting for the two characters to meet.
While Leitch did not return to direct John Wick: Chapter II, he remains involved with the franchise as an executive producer. So while doing press rounds for Atomic Blonde, Screen Rant asked the director if the new movie will eventually crossover with John Wick.
“It would be great! I get this question once in a while, and I think it’s just more their time period lines,” he said. While Leitch is happy to see the two characters on one screen together, a team-up is not possible. John Wick is set in the present day, the events of Atomic Blonde happened near the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union.
However, the director proposed that another project, something completely different, that will see Theron and Reeves together on the big screen. “Maybe there’s a time we see versions, or there’s uh, you know, the other real fantasy is that maybe there’s a project with both, that a new idea,” he told the site. “You know, that Charlize and Keanu could…, a story that we could have with the same action space and we can see them either partner up or go toe to toe.”
Both Atomic Blonde and John Wick are under the same studio – 87eleven, co-founded by Stehelski and Leitch – so it is not too impossible to see a crossover or even just a connected cinematic universe. Fans are excited to see them both on-screen especially because it has been ten years since they starred alongside each other in the movie The Devil’s Advocate.
Atomic Blonde Sequel
Meanwhile, during the premiere of the spy movie at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, Theron hinted that there might be more sequels on their way. She stated that her character, Lorraine, still has a lot of stories that need to be told.
“We’re actively talking about where we could go with a sequel or a prequel,” the 41-year-old told reporters (via Variety). “Lorraine is that she is such an enigma. We really didn’t saddle her with anything so that leaves us a lot of ways to go and continue her story.”
Moreover, Theron seems proud of the movie and is excited to return for more. She also talked about how the movie has been tagged as a symbol of women empowerment especially in the male dominated business of action movies. “It shows that girls can take ownership in this space a little more,” she stated.
The Academy Award winner has cemented her name as an action movie star since her critically-acclaimed performance in Mad Max: Fury Road. She also appeared as the chief villain in one of the highest-grossing movies of the year, Fate of the Furious. Atomic Blonde will be released on the big screen on July 28.
