What are the Aussies crazy about? Apparently, Sports, Politics, and 5 Seconds of Summer. The pop punk band finished 5th on twitter trends in Australia for this year.
Twitter released the trends for 2015 and it seems that Australians are big on Politics. The Federal politics took center stage with hashtags #AusPol, #LibSpill and #RefugeesWelcome, showing the world what Australia really thinks about the refugee crisis. Way to go, Australia! We need more empathetic people like you!
It was no surprise that television channel ABC’s political crossfire program Q&A featured on the list too with the hashtag #QandA. It took the third place in the trends list. We were expecting “Have You Been Paying Attention” to show up on the list too. Come on, Aussies! You could add a little humor to the mix!
Aussies were also very delighted to tweet about their maiden entry to the Eurovision song contest. “Australian Idol” winner Guy Sabastian’s performance was the tenth most tweeted event of the year.
But the biggest act on the list turned out to be a no-brainer at all. 5 Seconds of Summer entered the list at number 5. What with Michael Clifford burning half his face and looking like Two-face from Batman comics, and the rest of the band keeping up their antics, the 5SOS fan crowd kept tweeting and retweeting their feelings about 5SOS over twitter, making the whole act land at number five on twitter.
The pop punk band obviously couldn’t overthrow the reigning king, Cody Simpson who was the most followed Australian on twitter with over 7.59 million followers, but 5SOS were close; Luke Hemmings was at number two with 6.63 million followers and the rest of the band was close at heels in numbers.
9News Australia reports that the other entries to the top ten were the cooking show, “My Kitchen Rules” which appeared at #6, and the motley entries for sports events like #NRL, #AFL, and the Cricket World Cup.
