The dead are rising from their graves. News coming from last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con had revealed that Agent Peggy Carter, who previously starred in Captain America: The First Avenger and Agent Carter, will be coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Infinity War.
The MCU will come together next year to join the massive intergalactic war against the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin). Marvel and Disney have not divulged the entire cast that will appear in the upcoming movie, but the director duo, Anthony and Joe Russo, had confirmed in an earlier interview that up to 67 comic book characters would appear in Avengers 3 and 4.
Aside from the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy led by Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord will also join the fight. Supporting characters like Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) are also expected to appear. Meanwhile, beloved villains such as Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) have confirmed their attendances.
Apparently, more comic book characters who have transitioned to the big screen are coming. At Comic Con, Uproxx noticed Agent Carter in the special footage released by Marvel of Avengers: Infinity War.
To recall, Atwell’s heroine died of old age in last year’s Captain America: Civil War. Her own television series, which recounted her adventures as a special agent, was also canceled on ABC. That said, while she played an important role in the MCU, she no longer is a part of it.
However, At SDCC, the fans were reminded of the Agent Carter. The footage that the studio presented at Hall H included a montage of the Infinity Stone. Curiously, during the Time Stone moment, the video cuts to an old Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and then her younger self in Captain America: The First Avenger. The voice over said, “Time can fix anything.”
This fired up speculations that Agent Peggy Carter might be coming back to the MCU via Avengers: Infinity War. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange showed last year that the Eye of Agamotto, which contains the Time Stone, to not only reverse time, but also bring someone back to the dead. The Sorcerer Supreme, to battle Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius, revived Wong (Benedict Wong) and other sorcerers.
Why Will She Return?
Agent Carter has a few reasons to come back to the MCU. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) has found new love in Sharon Carter, but Peggy will always be his first love.
If Thanos successfully obtains all six Infinity Stones, he could revive Peggy in order to devastate Captain America. Without the super soldier, the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will likely have a disadvantage, especially against Thanos’ Black Order.
The Time Stone could also bring back the character in order to make way for Agent Carter. Fans are still rallying Marvel to bring back the show for Season 3 and Atwell is also still interested in reprising the role.
Perhaps, Atwell could also return in a flashback. The movie might address where the Infinity Stones have come from and why some of them are on Earth. It is possible that Agent Carter and S.H.I.E.L.D. have been watching the Infinity Stones, at least the ones on Earth.
Dead Men Walking
This is not the first time that rumors about Atwell’s appearance in the upcoming movie have come out. Earlier this year, a “leaked” cast list of the Avengers 3 has surfaced on the web, and it claimed that Agent Carter would be involved in the anticipated cinematic event. Also included was Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver who died saving Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
In addition, Michael Rooker was also spotted several times in Atlanta, Georgia where Marvel is filming Avengers: Infinity War. His character also died in this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, director James Gunn confirmed that Rooker and Marvel were just trolling fans. Whether the fan-favorite will return in the MCU to fight against or alongside Thanos will be revealed when the movie gets released next year.
