Avengers: Infinity War will be a major Marvel event. Thanos will be invading and many Avengers including Captain America could die. In case Steve dies, it would be his best friend Bucky who would take up the mantle of Captain America in his honor.

So if Bucky were to become the next Captain America, he will need the perfect moment to replace his friend as the superhero. Given the fact that Bucky could end up replacing Steve, here are moments when he could take up the mantle.

Steve’s death

With Thanos wielding the power of Infinity Gauntlet, he will have immeasurable power in his hand. Many heroes will die and Captain America could certainly be one of them.

Steve’s death could come in the form of sacrifice or him losing his life on the battlefield. So the moment when Steve dies, it could prove to be the perfect moment for Bucky to step up and become the next Captain America.

In the comics too when Steve died, Bucky took up the mantle of Captain America because he wanted to honor Steve and Tony recommended his name.

Steve gets injured

If Steve does not die in the movie, chances are he could get fatally injured. With his injuries being quite severe, he could himself pass on the mantle to his best friend Bucky.

Given the trust shown on him, Bucky could agree to become the next Captain America only to give up the mantle if Steve comes back.

In the end of Captain America: Civil War, when Tony asked Steve to drop the shield, he gladly gave it up. With this hinting that Steve is done becoming Captain America, if a necessity rises for someone to pick up the shield again, Bucky could fulfill the requirement.

Tony might be a little miffed with Bucky using the shield but if Steve plainly refuses to take up the shield, his best friend could step up and become the hero everyone needs.

Steve’s backup

Bucky could also take part in the war against Thanos as Steve’s backup. He has always been on Steve’s side and this time too he could be doing just that. For instance if Steve does not take up the shield in the war, Bucky could do that while acting as a backup.

This way if Steve dies, Bucky will have the right amount of motivation to honor his friend’s memory and replace him.

Comicbook.com reported that Avengers: Infinity War co-directors Russo brothers shared a picture of a location on Facebook. The picture sees the two brothers looking over at something. According to the report the location is Durham, England and could mean that the co-directors are scouting for location.

Avengers: Infinity War will release next year on May 4.
