“Backstrom” Season 1 Episode 13 “Rock Bottom” aired last Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 10:00 PM on FOX. In the season finale, Detective Lieutenant Everett Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) faced a turning point in his life as he was faced with the daunting task of busting his father, Sherriff Blue Backstrom on corruption charges during a murder investigation in which Backstrom realized that his father turned a blind eye to the active drug trade in his county.  Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with Dr. Deb Chaman (Rizwan Manji) telling Detective Lieutenant Everett Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) that he was going to give his recommendation to pull Backstrom from active duty to Chief Anna Cervantes (Inga Cadranel), as Backstrom had lied to the entire time to him. They were then interrupted by Officer Frank Moto (Page Kennedy) who informed them that an Indian had been murdered under a bridge.

There, Backstrom saw Captain Jessie Rocha (Adam Beach), Backstrom’s ex-fiancee’s new boyfriend, who told them that the victim, Jeremy Chase, had been in confidential informant. As he tried to cut a deal with Backstrom to get in on the case, and because he refused to tell them Jeremy’s last words, Backstrom had Detective John Almond (Dennis Haysbert) arrest him for obstructing the investigation.

Sergeant Peter Niedermayer (Kristoffer Polaha) then informed them that the victim had been killed by a long blade, and that he had been kicked in the back as well.

Back at the Special Crimes Unit, Amy Gazanian ( Sarah Chalke) came to apologize on behalf of her boyfriend, and told him that the last words of Jeremy were “Rock Bottom”, and that the victim had been dealing drugs on the Wabacooche Reservation, which caused an overjoyed Backstrom to call for Nadia Paquet (Beatrice Rosen), whom he asked to look into his father’s, Sheriff Blue Backstrom’s (Robert Forster), financials as he wanted to bust his father on corruption charges since nothing in the county happened without him knowing about it. This was later bolstered by the fact that Rocha, whom he reconciled with, told him that his father knew that Edgar Norwest (Gregory Cruz), a known dealer in the Indian Reservation, was distributing, but didn’t do anything about it.

However, since Paquet had found nothing, and as the Chief refused to let him arrest his father, Backstrom decided to take a few vacation days in order to go to Wabacooche County. He brought Gregory Valentine (Thomas Dekker) along so that he could drive for Backstrom, who brought along his mother, Louise Finster (Lolita Davidovich), who told him that he should visit the site where his mother’s ashes had been scattered.

They then went to Rock Bottom, where Valentine and Backstrom arrested Norwest. However, while they were questioning him in Backstrom’s van, Blue came up, and told him to release Norwest, who was terrified of Blue. They then brought the matter to a judge, who allowed Norwest to go free. Afterwards, Blue got mad at him after Backstrom accused him of corruption.

Later that night, Rocha confronted Backstrom, who had left him out of the loop, and was about to attack him when the rest of the unit came in, as they decided to help Backstrom so that they could save their own jobs.

They then managed to convince Rocha to help them out, and loaned Moto to him as back up so that he could arrest Norwest. Meanwhile, Almond and Detective Sergeant Nicole Gravely (Genevieve Angelson) discovered that Backstrom was telling the truth about his father after discovering that Norwest’s lawyer had been driven out of town by Blue who had torn his ear off. After discovering that Rocha had gone missing, Paquet pinged his phone, and discovered that he had been stabbed and left for dead.

Outside the hospital, Backstrom told his father that because he never told him the truth about his mother’s death, Backstrom had grown up thinking that his father hated him because he had killed his mother. Valentine then heard them arguing, and told him that he should be proud of Backstrom. He then revealed to him that he was his son, and told him that both of his sons were now telling him to go away.

Afterwards, Backstrom realized that the now missing Norwest had been killed by his father, and had been dumped at the abandoned mercury mine that had been dubbed “The Pearly Gates”, which Norwest had mentioned earlier. Sure enough, they found his corpse there. Later, after Almond played devil’s advocate, Backstrom called the State Police, who took charge of the crime scene, and who began an investigation into Blue Backstrom.

The next day, Backstrom, Louise and Valentine went to the river where Backstrom’s mother’s ashes had been scattered. After Backstrom talked to her, he let the bowl she had made for him, which Valentine had saved, go down the river.

Back at home, with Dr. Deb, Backstrom finally went to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where he told the group that he had started hitting rock bottom ever since he had been called upon to start the Special Crimes Unit, who was now his family. He then broke down as he realized that he had no control over his life and addiction, which was met with by applause by Dr. Deb and the other attendees.
