Kate Walsh at the 2011 Voice Awards.

Bad Judge” Season 1 Episode 9 “Face Mask Mom” aired on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. on NBC. It's Christmas time, but there’s a heat wave in California and it’s affecting everyone at Judge Wright’s courtroom. Find out what happened in this episode in this recap below.

Christmas in California was a bit different anywhere else in the United States this year. It’s a warm 97 degrees, It’s even warmer inside the courtroom because the AC’s thermostat seemed to be busted. Rebecca (Kate Walsh) walked into work dressed inappropriately in her cutout shirt.  mom complained upon seeing Rebecca going through the steel bars. The mom was stopped by security. She was not allowed to bring in a cooler full of ice and cold juice.

That mom was “Face Mask Mom” Regina Bullock (guest star Lennon Parham). Her attack on a kid in PeeWee football was caught on video and became a viral sensation. Her case was being tried in Rebecca’s court that day. But because of the air conditioning situation, everyone inside was having a hard time concentrating.

Rebecca complained to Tedward (Tone Bell) about the temperature. But Tedward already filled out requests, sent emails and voicemails to the guys in charge, which turned out to be union guys. They were difficult to compromise with, especially this time of the year.

Because of the heat, DA Tom (John Ducey) started hallucinating and speaking in tongues while arguing his case against Mrs. Bullock. Eventually, he passed out from heat exhaustion. The temperature got so bad that Rebecca, together with Tedward, had to hunt down the union guys. They found them in the basement of the court, and guess what? They were just playing poker and they were wrapped in jackets and sweaters as it was freezing down there. Rebecca demanded them to fix the air conditioning as soon as possible, or else… and so it was done.

But just as the room started to cool, Mrs. Bullock got all heated up because she wanted the judge to hear what she had to say about her case. She was only protecting her own child who was being bullied by the kid she attacked. She demanded to see a video of that bullying. Why should her video be the only one sensationalized online and in the media?

Going beyond protocol, Rebecca asked Mrs. Bullock to join her in her chambers for a heart-to-heart talk. The mom admitted that she was struggling through the breakup of her marriage and has since been on full-on protection mode. The incident with the kid made her snap. She just really wanted to protect her children from all the pain and the hurt in the world.

Rebecca: Look, I saw that video. That little douchebag did have it coming. But still, he’s a child.
Mrs. Bullock: But you just called him a douchebag.
Rebecca: Yes, but I’m not on trial here.

Rebecca did not give “Face Mask Mom” jail time. Instead ordered her to six months of counseling with a family therapist. She also handed out a card with an address she needed to go to the next day. The address was Rebecca’s house.

Rebecca: Maybe this is an opportunity for you to do something fun for yourself.

And so, she brought Mrs. Bullock to the beach where she encouraged her to strip naked and swim in the cold ocean. It was a liberating experience for the mother, who was so grateful for what Rebecca has done for her.

Meanwhile, the court stenographer, Judy, organized a Secret Santa with her peers. But they only realized that this was rigged when Rebecca, Tom and Tedward all found themselves in Judy’s house bearing her presents. Yup, sneaky Judy made sure that all of them got her name only! She wanted all the gifts to herself because she believes that it is better to receive than to give.
