“Bad Teacher” Season 1 Pilot episode premieres on April 24, 2014 at 9.30 p.m. on CBS. Read on to find out more about it in MNG’s “Bad Teacher” spoilers.
Deadline reported that the network ordered a 13-episode pilot for the new comedy series starring Ari Graynor (“Fringe,” “For a Good Time, Call…”) on Jan. 2013. The development was headed by Hilary Winston (“Happy Endings,” “Community”) and produced by the duo of film/TV writers-producers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (“The Office,” “Year One”).
According to the official show summary posted on the CBS website, “Bad Teacher” revolves around a new divorcee and former trophy wife who will fake her way up to be a school teacher to earn money and find Husband #2.
Sounds familiar? “Bad Teacher” is based on the R-rated comedy film starring Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake. It was also produced and written by Stupnitsky and Eisenberg, who are now working on the TV adaptation.
Featured in a one-minute trailer, Ari Graynor plays the role of Meredith Davis. Davis has been dumped by her cheating husband and was left penniless. Inspired by the suggestion of a friend’s stepdaughter, she had devised a three-part plan. She started off on faking her resume to apply at the middle school where Lily was studying. After succeeding in being part of the school board, she just needs to find a rich, single dad to to regain her pre-divorce, lavish lifestyle.
Graynor will be joined by other cast members including Kristin Davis (“Sex In The City,” “Melrose Park”) as Ginny Taylor-Clapp, David Alan Grier as Principal Carl Gaines (“In Living Color,” “Peeples”), Sara Gilbert (“The Talk”) as Irene, Ryan Hansen (“Veronica Mars,” “2 Broke Girls”) as Joel Kotsky, and Sara Rodier (“Happy Endings,” Wendell & Vinnie”) as Lily.
In an interview with the Modesto Bee, Graynor admitted that she has never seen the movie version of “Bad Teacher” because of her busy schedule. Although it was a good thing, she pointed out that the upcoming CBS comedy is different to its film predecessor.
“Both characters are sassy teachers, but the plot and other characters are very different. I know a lot of viewers who saw the movie will have preconceived notions about the series, but we are really going to be able to open up the story a lot more.” Graynor said in the Modesto Bee article.
She shared that her middle school experience was far from the role as the gold-digging teacher in the show. She also said that she was a good student in school and she avoids getting in trouble.
“It’s funny that I’m playing Meredith, who is a bit of a rule breaker. She doesn’t care what people think about her. I’m quite the opposite,” explained Graynor.
Aside from having a lead role in the show, Graynor is also one of the producers and part of the casting group alongside Winston, Stupnitsky and Eisenberg. She said that having a great cast is an important part of any series aside from an “incredible, tight, and smart” script.
“That’s what makes a series watchable over a long period time. You are engaged with every single person who comes on screen. It has to be about every single actor,” Graynor added.
The “Bad Teacher” Season 1 Pilot Episode premieres on April 24, 2014 at 9.30 p.m. It is directed by Don Scardino and written by Hilary Winston.
