Joss Whedon is making a solo Batgirl movie and Alicia Silverstone wants in. While doing press rounds for her new movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, the actress revealed that she wants to reprise the role of Barbara Gordon in the new DC Extended Universe. However, this time around, she promises that her performance will not be as big of a disaster.
Silverstone’s Second Chance?
Most fans probably want to forget Batman and Robin, the superhero movie from 1997 that featured George Clooney as the Caped Crusader and Chris O’Donnell as his trusty sidekick. Silverstone also appeared as Barbara Wilson, niece of Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Gough).
But despite the all-star cast which also included Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie directed by Joel Schumacher was a disappointing mess. It was critically panned for many reasons and, to this day, it retains an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
But Silverstone wants to do it all over again. In an interview with USA Today, the actress revealed that if given a chance to play the role of Batgirl on the big screen again, she will do a better job.
“I feel like I could do a much better Batgirl now than I did then,” the actress said. “It would be fun to tackle it again because I’m older and my acting is better. I know I would bring so much more to it. I was just a baby. It was a different thing. But I had fun back then. And I think it would be fun to do it again.”
Silverstone was only in her early ’20s when she landed the role of Batgirl in Batman & Robin in 1997. Prior to that, she appeared in the teen movie Clueless.
She, however, has one request for the solo Batgirl movie: she wants to see a few alterations to Barbara Gordon’s batsuit. The 40-year-old revealed that she costume she wore in the 1997 movie was not exactly made to be comfortable.
“Maybe something more comfortable would be nice,” she recalled. “Something you can sit in. Something you can get out of to pee.”
There have already been a few innovations over the years that made wearing a superhero costume a lot less of a pain in the butt. Gal Gadot even commented that, after a few alterations, her Wonder Woman costume is now so comfortable that it feels like she is wearing pyjamas.
In an interview with The Sun on Sunday, Gadot recalled that the first time she tried her Wonder Woman on, it was so tight that she could not breathe. “I couldn’t breathe when I first tried the costume on, it was so tight. So I went to the gym, tried it on again and it felt great, a much better fitting,” she shared.
But, then, the costume department made it tighter until she negotiated with the team. ” I made it very clear that I needed to have some oxygen going through my body to shoot the movie,” she said.
Eventually, they adjusted the costume until Gadot can wear the red and blue suit every day for the whole duration of filming. Of course, there were other things that the actress had to endure while filming in London like the rain and cold wind.
The solo Batgirl movie will be written and directed by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avengers). As of this writing, Warner Bros. is yet to announce who will play the role of Barbara Gordon. Emma Stone is a fan-favorite for the role, but rumors claim that The 100 star Lindsey Morgan has already been cast as the DCEU’s Batgirl.
