Not everybody was giddy with the fact that Ben Affleck is taking on the role of the new Dark Knight in the upcoming “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.” However, after a series of dodging cynicisms from both anticipating viewers and professional critics, producer Charles Roven finally gives his explanation as to why Affleck landed one of Hollywood’s most heavy set roles. Read on for further details.
One of the biggest shockers in the movie industry was when Affleck was cast as the new Dark Knight for the upcoming film “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Casting aside criticisms and cynicisms, who would have thought that Warner Bros. would be getting such an A-list actor to portray another version of the Dark Knight? The movie has enough compelling storyline and fan base for the studio to hire an ultimately different (and not-so-known) actor. So why cast such a heavy-set actor to play the role? The question may very well now be answered as producer of the film, Charles Roven, finally puts an end to all the questions when he explained how extremely fitting Affleck is for the role of the Dark Knight on the new franchise.
Screen Rant reports that “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” producer Charles Roven expressed further details on their Affleck as Batman choice during an interview for LMU Film School’s Hollywood Masters sequence. The ultimate "Dark Knight" franchise producer shared that the "Argo" star and director exuded the right amount of intense maturity that he’s able to manifest in more ways than one that could stand as intimidating elements to the young Superman who is Henry Cavill.
“We knew that we wanted a very mature Batman, because we wanted to juxtapose him against this young Superman. So we wanted a guy who was tougher, rugged, ‘hard life lived’ about him… We also wanted a guy with big stature. Ben is 6′ 4″. Henry [Cavill] is 6’1″. We wanted Batman to tower over Superman. Not hugely, not like a basketball player. Superman needed to look up to Batman. We wanted that dynamic. And Ben could do that, easily. So we really… he was the first guy we went to. That’s who we wanted,” stated Roven on Screen Rant.
Looking back into their short list, Affleck may have been at the top, but there were also other actors who were considered to play the role. According to ComingSoon.net, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin were included in the exclusive listing, while their top choice (Affleck) was still deliberating whether or not to sign up on the project, but both emerged to be a dead end. Despite the little hesitation Affleck expressed on the offer, he still ended up with the role after he managed to clear some specific character elements with director Zack Snyder and producer Roven as well.
Ultimately, we shall be expecting a different kind of Batman — a “very, very, very rough” incarnation of Bruce Wayne on this new franchise. Let’s see their expectations unfold in the opening of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” on May 6, 2016.
