Ben Affleck recently prepped fans of Christian Bale’s version of the caped crusader for disappointment, as he revealed that in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” he will playing a very different Bruce Wayne from what audiences are used to seeing in the “Dark Knight” series of films.
In a recent article published by Hollywood Reporter, Affleck noted how Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” films created a Batman that was made to tell a finite, contained story. He adds that while his version of Batman will be faithful to the original Batman mythology, it will be very different from the one Christian Bale portrayed. A major reason he cited for the contrast is that in the Nolan / Bale adaptations, Batman wasn’t part of a universe that had other superheroes in it, essentially saying that in there, Batman is the only person closest to having superhuman ability. It’s different for “Batman v. Superman,” however, as the film (in preparation towards the Justice League) brings with it the possibility of working with various superheroes besides Superman himself. A very different universe, indeed.
Yahoo! Movies adds that Affleck will play the “billionaire playboy” aspect of Wayne more prominently, as opposed to the more serious and focused tone of Bale’s past performance. The result would be a Bruce Wayne who is not quite adept in dealing with the immediate problems and inner conflict that may bother coming his way. Add to this the pain and a void he unconsciously seems to try filling and you got a recipe for a character that is bitter, with thoughts clouded by anger and frustration.
Seeing as this will be definitely be an interesting twist to Bruce Wayne’s character, the fresh take on Batman is only fitting for the concept of the movie. Will Superman be the one who motivates Batman to become more than he is, or be the one that will drive him into his own banishment? We’ll know answers to these questions and more as “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” hits theatres on March 2016.
