“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is an upcoming superhero film featuring DC Comics’ most famous characters, Superman and Batman. The movie will serve as a sequel to the 2013 film “Man of Steel,” a modern retelling of Superman’s origin starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner and Russel Crowe.
The sequel was announced earlier at the San Diego Comic-Con 2013 after the release of “Man of Steel.”
“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” will follow the story of both Batman and Superman, along with some other known DC characters — such as Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman — after the events of Man of Steel. Henry Cavill reprises his role as Superman, while Ben Affleck was chosen to portray Batman’s newest incarnation. Along Cavill and Affleck, Gal Gadot is cast to play Diana Prince, the Amazonian princess turned superhero, Wonder Woman. Surprisingly, Jesse Eisenberg will play as Superman’s greatest rival, Lex Luthor. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane will reprise their roles as Lois Lane, Perry White and Martha Kent respectively. Other actors included in the film are Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth.
The casting of Affleck, Gadot, and Eisenberg was met with some backlash from fans, with some going to such lengths as creating online petitions calling for the removal of Affleck. Nonetheless, Director Zack Snyder addressed this concern. “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne,” remarked Snyder in a statement, as published on Variety.
“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is written by Chris Terrio, with Snyder directing the film.
An announcement was made earlier that “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” will be followed by a Justice League film, where Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Ray Fisher are expected to reprise their roles, with Snyder also directing the planned sequel.
“Dawn of Justice” will be released on April 29, 2016 in United Kingdom and on May 6, 2016 in the United States.
