It’s no big secret that Iron Man 3 was an extremely painful viewing for Marvel Comics fans. While the first two Iron Man movies tried to stray away as little as possible from the comics, the third installment derailed completely with the introduction of the Mandarin.
The supposed powerful antagonist and a key villain from the comics was expected by fans to go down in an epic finale against the armored suit. However, the director had other plans. The Mandarin in Iron Man 3, portrayed by Sir Ben Kingsley, was shown as a complete fake and goof. Half way into the movie Kingsley’s character is revealed to be nothing more than a drug-addicted actor named Trevor Slattery who has been hired by external forces to act as a decoy for the Iron Man. He’s not even a real terrorist. We got played big time!
While the future of the Iron Man franchise is unclear with Robert Downey Jr and Marvel Studios focusing on other projects; the Mandarin though is coming back and probably in an effort to fix things with comics fans.
Speaking with the Belfast Telegraph, Kingsley confirmed that he’s returning to Marvel for an undisclosed project, one where he gets to work again with the Iron Man 3 crew.
“It’s a secret Marvel project,” he said. “I’m not allowed to say any more, you’re going to have to wait and see… I was with many members of the crew that were involved in Iron Man 3. It was lovely to see them again. It was great to be with this wonderful family.”
“I think they have enormous taste as creative artists. There’s nothing lazy or gratuitous about their work. They are at the top of their game, and they’re great company to keep.”
So what do you suppose Kingsley’s top-secret project is? Is Marvel setting up for Iron Man 4 where Mandarin is able to receive his powerful rings following the release of Thor: The Dark World and The Avengers: Age of Ultron?
