Marvel will be in talks with Benedict Cumberbatch for the role of Doctor Strange, according to[H1]  Deadline. The actor is said to be the studio's top pick for the coveted role. Marvel is also considering Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, Matthew McConaughey and Tom Hardy.

Cumberbatch's name has been floating around since June this year. “As far as I'm aware, even if that was the case, it couldn't work out because I'm doing a little play called 'Hamlet' in London. So I don't think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It's a shame if I miss out, but who knows?” said Cumberbatch to MTV. Cumberbatch is playing the title role until Oct. 31, 2014. He is also working on the fourth season of “Sherlock Holmes,” a BBC series.

Marvel selected Joaquin Phoenix for the role just before Comic-Con this year, but negotiations reportedly went south as the actor refused to sign a contract for multiple films. The studio then approached Cumberbatch.

Doctor Strange is a Marvel character who studies mysticism after a car accident damages his hands and ends his career as a practicing neurosurgeon. He has been mentioned in previous Marvel releases like “Thor” and “Captain America: Winter Soldier.” The movie is scheduled for release on July 8, 2016. Scott Derrickson, who is known for his work on “Sinister” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” has been appointed as director. Jon Spaihts is writing the screenplay.

Cumberbatch, 38, first appeared in theater productions in his native England. He went on to work in television then made the transition to films. He is best known for playing Smaug and the Necromancer in “The Hobbit” film franchise. He has a cult following and was voted the sexiest movie star at Empire Online, beating the likes of Tom Hiddleston and Henry Cavill.

The actor was bewildered by the distinction.

“I’m still processing this strange misperception. I suppose I’ll have to find a way to deal with the strain. I enjoy being considered handsome, even though I think it’s hysterical,” said Cumberbatch in an interview, as published on Cumberbatchweb.
