Cumberbatch is set to play as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel’s upcoming “Doctor Strange.” “Doctor Strange” is Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first venture into the world of magic and the unknown. Created by Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange made his first ever appearance in “Strange Tales #110 in 1963.” Originally a gifted surgeon, the egotistical Dr. Stephen Strange’s life changed when he got into a car accident, which badly damaged the nerves of his hands. Seeking the help of the Ancient One to heal his hands, the surgeon turned sorcerer was then trained instead to be proficient in the verse of Mystic Arts, becoming Earth’s greatest and most powerful mystic and master of the arcane arts, the Sorcerer Supreme, tasked to defend the realm against demons and mystical forces, such as Baron Mordo, Dormammu, Shuma-Gorath, the Undying Ones and Nightmare.

The 38-year-old Cumberbatch comes from a strong background in science fiction and fantasy acting, which includes a starring role as Kahn in “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” the voice of Smaug in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series “Sherlock,” where he is set to return next year. He’s most recent film appearances are in “The Imitation Game” and DreamWorks Animation’s “The Penguins of Madagascar,” where he lent his voice to Classified, a gray wolf and team leader of the North Wind.

Scott Derickson is tied to direct Marvel’s feature pic from a script by Jon Spaihts, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 8, 2016. “Doctor Strange” is scheduled to begin shooting in May 2015 at Pinewood-Shepperton studios in UK.
